Sudanese armed forces say not involved in Upper Nile incidents

KHARTOUM, Feb 19, 2005 (SUNA) — The Armed Forces were not involved in the recent incidents that took place in Akobo town, Upper Nile State, the Deputy Chief of Staff for orientation and the official Spokesman of the Armed Forces, Gen. Al-Abbass Abdul-Rahman, said Friday.

Al-Abbass explained that armed clashes occurred in Acobo town provoked by tribal differences, affirming that the Armed Forces support the Peace Agreement and its implementation and that the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM) understands the situations.

In this regard, he revealed that the Armed Forces coordinate with the representative of the SPLM, Cdr. Taban Deng, in order to contain any passive impacts from any media statements.
