Sudan anti-polio immunisation underway
KHARTOUM, Sudan, Feb 28, 2005 (PANA) — Sudan has launched phase two of its polio national immunisation days to coincide with campaigns underway in neighbouring countries to eradicate the disease.
Health officials led by director of the Expanded Programme on
Immunisation (EPI) Al-Tayeb Ahmed Al Sayed launched the campaign Sunday in “Angola Camp”, in the province of Jebel Aulia, 120km south of Khartoum.
World Health Organisation and UN Children Fund officials attended
the ceremony.
Al-Sayed said the campaign was necessary to prevent fresh upsurge of poliomyelitis caused by the Darfur conflict, as well as the growing number of refugees and immigrants engaged in cross-border movements.
