Trying Darfur suspects a Sudanese affairs- AU’s Obasanjo

KHARTUOM, Mar 7, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — African Union demanded the Security Council overlook the issue of bringing to justice persons implicated in the Darfur events. AU Chairman, Obasanjo, in a message to the Council said the issue was a Sudanese-African affair Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information and Communications, Abdul Basit Sabdarat disclosed that President Obasanjo will dispatch to Sudan a legal envoy who will arrive within the coming two days to discuss the issue with the government with the aim of arriving at a formula to address the issue.

Sabdarat said he believed that AU President’s message would leave a positive impact, adding that an African draft proposal in this regard is being consulted.

In a related development, chairman of AU Commission Alfa Omar Konari will visit Sudan within the next few days to discuss with the government further coordination to address the Darfur Issue.

Minister of Information and Communications Abdulbasit Sabdarat in a statement yesterday said Konari’s visit comes in response to an invitation by the First Vice President. Konari affirmed AU support of government efforts, to resolve the conflict, commending the first Vice Presidents views on the issue, added Sabdarat.

Following his visit to Sudan, Konari will meet with AU Chairman in Abuja with the aim of pushing forward efforts to bring about a just solution acceptable to all parties, stated the minister.
