Sudan accuses Eritrea of massing troops along eastern border

KHARTOUM, Mar 10, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — The governor of the eastern state of Kassala, Gen Faruq Hassan Mohamed Nur, has said Eritrea is still massing troops along the eastern border with Sudan and is also carrying out surveillance activities in conjunction with some armed groups.

Addressing a news conference in Kassala yesterday, the governor said the state was conducting an extensive security operation in anticipation of an aggression and stressed that the security situation in the state was stable.

The governor said the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) was fully complying with the cease-fire agreement in areas under its control, which he named as Hamashkoreb, Rusayris and Karquj, im eastern Sudan.

The governor also referred to the problem of smuggling, especially of cigarettes, drugs and alcohol, which threatens the security of the state.
