Detention of Human rights activist Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman

Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO)

Press Release

March 15, 2005

Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman, together with Dr. Mudawi, was arrested by the National Security during Eid al Adha celebrations, while staying in Kondua, Northern Kordofan, on 24 January 2005. Since then, his family has no news about him and his place of stay.

The arrest and disappearance of Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman is most worrying. Furthermore, the absence of any information about his current location is troublesome. Until now no charges have been formulated against him.

Born in 1956, Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman is married and has two children. Graduated from Cairo University Branch in Khartoum, he is working on commerce field. In parallel he is a volunteer of SUDO (Sudan Social Development Organization); he has notably collaborated to the implementation of peace building projects.

Therefore, it is urgent that the Advisory Council for Human Rights – as a body to guarantee the application of fundamental Human Rights provisions ratified by the Sudan – takes action.

Since his arrest, SUDO has engaged in many efforts to ensure that his Rights are respected. If the Rights of Dr Mudawi have been finally respected, we cannot say the same for Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman.
SUDO is urgently asking:

– To ensure that Salah Mohamed Abdelrahman is given immediate and regular access to his relatives and lawyers;
– To give him access to a doctor knowing his medical past;
– To give assurances that he will not be ill-treated while in detention;
– To promptly inform him and his family of the reasons for his arrest – if he isn’t charged with a recognizably criminal offence he should be released immediately.
