Sudanese president welcomes mediation with Eritrea

KHARTOUM, Mar 17, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir has welcomed the outcome of Foreign minister Mustafa Osman Ismail’s talks with opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leader Mohamed Osman al-Mirghani.

r_el-Bashir_Ismail-2.jpgAl-Bashir also underscore the need to remove any obstacles that might hinder the development of ties between Sudan and Eritrea, the Sudanese daily Al-Sahafah said.

He stressed the need that the efforts aiming at bringing about a comprehensive concord should continue to consolidate the peace agreement with the south and introduce the necessary democratic changes.

At their meeting yesterday, the foreign minister also briefed Al-Bashir on the outcome of his talks in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and with Al-Mirghani.

Speaking to the press, the minister said that he had briefed Al-Bashir on his talks with Al-Mirghani in Mecca which dealt with the resumption of the talks between the government and NDA in Cairo and their cooperation to create a comprehensive and an all-inclusive concord in Sudan, introduce the necessary democratic changes and consolidate the peace agreement.

He added that his talks with Al-Mirghani also dealt with the Sudanese-Eritrean relations and the need to remove any obstacle that might hinder their development.

In this respect, Ismail pointed out that the president of the republic had welcomed his talks and understanding with Al-Mirghani that the latter should mediate with Eritrea, and asserted the need that such efforts should continue.
