South Africa’s FM to visit Sudan

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Mar 22, 2005 (SAPA) — Foreign Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will depart for Khartoum on Tuesday to attend a meeting aimed at rebuilding the Sudan.

Nkosazana_Dlamini-Zuma1.jpgShe will lead an African Union delegation to the four-day meeting, which starts on Wednesday and ends on Saturday, said spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa.

The meeting, held under the AU’s Ministerial Committee banner, will be attended by nine foreign ministers — from Ethiopia, Egypt, Algeria, Gabon, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan itself.

The foreign ministers agreed at last month’s meeting in Cape Town to visit Sudan to “understand what is required when we speak of post-conflict reconstruction in Sudan”.

South Africa chairs the AU Ministerial Committee on Post-Conflict Reconstruction in Sudan.

“In addition, Norway will be hosting a Donor Conference in Oslo on 11-12 April 2005.

“It will therefore be important for this committee to brief its international partners on what is practically required in Sudan,” Dlamini-Zuma said in a statement.
