Sudanese refugees in Uganda to be registered for repatriation

KAMPALA, Mar 26, 2005 (Xinhua) — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has announced plans to register all Sudanese refugees in Uganda with a hope of starting a repatriation exercise by October, Radio Uganda reported on Saturday.

The announcement was made by a senior official from the UNHCR office in Kampala, Feixas Vihe when talking to the Ugandan government radio.

Feixas said the registration of refugees is a routine process of the UN agency. adding that the Uganda has about 235,000 refugees from different neighboring countries including Rwanda, Sudan, Somalia, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Feixas said they had agreed with the governments that those willing to go back to their countries of origin be encouraged to do so.

She however said the situation in southern Sudan was still volatile and that it was not advisable for refugees to return.
