To End Genocide in Darfur

PRESS CONFERENCE: 100 DAYS OF ACTION

When: Wednesday, April 6, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Where: The Senate Hart Building, Room 216, in Washington, D.C.

What: Since February 2003, the Sudanese government, using Arab “Janjaweed” militias, air power, and organized starvation, has killed more than 380,000 Darfurians and displaced almost 3 million; at least 15,000 continue to die every month. The UN Secretary-General has called it “little short of hell on earth.”

April 6th marks the 11th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide that resulted in 800,000 deaths. We will remember the 100 days of the Rwandan genocide by taking action against the genocide in Darfur.

Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ), and Congressman Donald Payne (D-NJ), the congressional leaders on this issue, will speak at a press conference to launch the Genocide Intervention Fund’s 100 Days of Action Campaign. Gayle Smith, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, and former Senior Director of African Affairs at the National Security Council (1998-2001), will also speak at the event. This campaign aims to raise one million dollars for African Union peacekeepers in Darfur, and produce 100,000 letters to government officials. We hope to fill the room with concerned citizens from all over the country – our representatives will see Americans demanding action in Darfur.
