Rebels attack locality in Sudan’s Western Kordofan

KHARTOUM, Apr 13, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — A rural area in Wad Banda locality in Western Kordofan State, has been attacked Saturday by one of the Darfur rebel groups.

According to the Khartoum based Akhbar al-Yawm, the Western Darfur governor, Salman Sulayman al-Safi, said a rebel group attacked Sudayrat region yesterday morning at 08:00 local time , using three vehicles, and seized two private Thuraya satellite phones.

Al-Safi added that an armed patrol from Wad Banda went to the venue of the attack to pursue the armed group; it caught up with its members in Al-Jubanah region, west Sudayrat.

Following a shoot-out, the armed forces were able kill a number of rebels, destroy two vehicles and recover weapons and ammunition, Al-Safi added.

Al-Safi sent a warning to the rebel groups that they should stop terrorizing the inhabitants in the regions northwest of En-Nahud locality, stressing that the people of Western Kordofan State will not go into war with the rebel groups but will defend themselves if attacked.

He says the armed forces understand their mission, and are monitoring the situation.
