Sudan to implement UN human rights body resolution

KHARTOUM, Apr 23, 2005 (Xinhua) — Sudan promised Saturday to implement a resolution adopted by the UN top human rights body, which unanimously condemned “continued, widespread and systematic violations of human rights” in Sudan’s western Darfur region.

Sudanese State Minister of Foreign Affairs Najib el-Kheir told reporters that his government was committed to the resolution and would work for its implementation through certain mechanisms.

In the resolution 36 adopted in Geneva on Thursday, the UN Human Rights Commission condemns violence by all parties in Darfur, where an over two-year conflict between rebel groups and Sudanese troops and Arab militias have killed thousands and displaced over one million.

The 53-member Commission appointed a special investigator to ” monitor the situation of human rights” in Darfur and report back to the UN General Assembly and the Geneva-based Commission.

It called on Khartoum to disarm the Arab militias ad bring to justice all those involved in human rights violations.

However, the minister said the resolution failed to address similar violations in Iraq.

He hoped that the UN Commission will conduct consultations with the Sudanese government to help it implement the resolution.
