Tripartite committee overseeing Sudan’s Darfur truce to meet Sunday

KHARTOUM, Sep 6, 2003 (dpa) — A tripartite committee to monitor the ceasefire agreement in Darfur between government officials and rebels is due to meet in the Theina area in the North Darfur region on Sunday, a Sudanese government official said Saturday.

The committee of 15 members – five members from government, five Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) members and five members from the government of Chad – has been established, presidential adviser El Tayeb Mohammed El Khair announced.

The government said it has started to dispatch basic needs to the war victims and affected people in Darfur region, but it did not reveal the type and quantity of the aid.

El Khair named Major General Magzoub Rahma as chairman of the Sudanese side. The committee will begin its mandate to oversee the ceasefire agreement in Darfur on Sunday.

He also stated that the government has arranged for wireless radio to be used by field commanders in both government and SLM areas.

The contribution of the government of Chad will be to help settle any disagreement which may arise in the process of the implementation of the truce. If there is a disagreement the two sides will contact the Chadian minister.

In June the government and the SLM signed a ceasefire agreement brokered by Chadian president Idris Deby.
