Al-Bashir affirms Sudan’s seriousness to achieve peace in Darfur


Jan 23, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese president, Omer Al-Bashir, has affirmed the seriousness of Sudan government to achieve a lasting political solution for Darfur crisis, in a manner which is similar to the method of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which was signed by the government and Sudan People’s liberation movement (SPLM).

Addressing the Sixth African summit at the Friendship Hall Monday, al-Bashir said that the prevalence of stability and peace in Sudan will pose a strong boost to progress and the welfare of the African continent, the official SUNA news agency reported.

He lauded the role of the African Union in helping Sudan reach a lasting solution for the crisis in Darfur and ending the war there, so that the country can go ahead to implement its development and rehabilitation projects.

Sudanese president has particularly commended the efforts and the mediation of the President of Nigeria and chairman of the African Union, Olusegen Ojasanjo, to make a success the ongoing negotiations in Abuja between the government and the armed movements in Darfur.

He praised the role of the sister African nations which have sent forces on the ground for the prevalence of security, cease-fire and security in Darfur region. The President also appreciated the continuing support of the international community to the process to restore peace and stability in Darfur.

He referred to the unique position of Sudan as juncture and an area for intermingling between the African cultures, civilizations and heritages, calling for due concern with the proposal for establishment of a pan-African organization for cultural, educational and scientific affairs.

He called for more effective and just chances for Africa in the adoption of international decisions. Al-Bashir said that Africa shall release itself from affiliations and does not succumb to foreign pressures and interventions which fuel seditions and disputes in Africa.

He said that African is required to formulate the African model for good governance, which guarantees the principles of justice and rights for all the population groups.

He indicated that the African peoples shall work to create a new social model that meets the aspirations of the new communities and the neglected regions and guarantees their rights, adding that this model shall based on the principles of good governance and fair sharing of wealth and power.

President Al-Bashir has stressed the importance of establishing a new effective model for realizing economic development and integration, enhancement of the investment, economic reform, productivity, exports and food security in the African states.

He also affirmed in his speech before the summit the importance of women education and their participation in the decision-making process at all the political, economic, health and social fields.
