Three western Sudanese sentenced to death for joining rebels

KHARTOUM, Jan 29, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) –The Al-Fashir criminal court headed by Salih Sirr al-Khatami, in Tuesday 27 January has passed a sentence of 11 and seven years imprisonment, as well as a death penalty against three Sudanese citizens.

The charges dealt with subversion and incitement to war against the state, smuggling of weapons, incitement to violently oppose authority and participation in terrorist and criminal organizations.

The court pronounced a death sentence against Tayyib Ali Ahmad who joined the rebel Sudan Liberation Army, collaborated with them in Tinah, near Chad border, Al-Fashir and Mellit in northern Darfur and was arrested during one of the armed clashes. The court said he was also involved in the attack against military aircraft in Al-Fashir airport last April.

Al-Sadiq Abdallah Khamis and Ahmad Ishaq were sentenced to 11 and four year imprisonment respectively on charges of subversion and incitement to war.
