South Sudan’s Warrap state quiet after sectional fighting – VP Machar

May 10, 2008 (JUBA) – The Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan and Deputy Chairperson of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Dr. Riek Machar Teny, said Warrap state is now quiet after sectional fighting in the area.

Riek-Machar.jpgHe told the press at Juba International Airport shortly after his arrival from Warrap state that the fighting was between Dinka ethnic group sections of Aguok and Kuach on one hand against Abuok section.

Machar said he discussed with the state government and SPLA command in Warrap state how the situation should be arrested and resolved to deploy SPLA forces to stop any further clashes.

He did not disclose the number of casualties or the cause of the clashes. VP Dr. Riek Machar (C) welcomed by GOSS Regional Cooperation Minister,

He added that the situation was quiet but still unstable and that the Southern Sudan Security Committee will meet in Juba to try to find an amicable solution to the state insecurity.

Machar went to Warrap State on Wednesday accompanying the bodies of late Dr. Justin Yac Arop, Presidential Advisor, and his beloved wife who died in the recent plane crash near Rumbek town on May 2, 2008.

He said he participated in the burial ceremony of the late in the state’s Twic County and spent two of his four days in the state comforting the relatives of the deceased.
