Put an end to Riak Machar’s political ambition

By Steve Paterno

May 18, 2008 — John Garang once invoked important statement that will continue to ring true in the minds of South Sudanese for generations to come. In his statement, John Garang the chairman of Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), said, he was willing to forgive Riak Machar for his betrayal and treacherous actions for having defected to Khartoum and wage Khartoum’s proxy war against SPLM/A in the 1990s. However, he added that the people of South Sudan will remember Riak Machar as someone who stabbed the South Sudan people’s struggle movement from the back at a critical point in history when the people of South Sudan were on a verge of victory to capture Juba, Khartoum’s largest military garrison in South at the time.

Unfortunately, today, the very Riak Machar who the South Sudanese will forever have in their memories as a traitor and betrayal is vowing to become the leader of South Sudan by trying to capture the leadership of SPLM through the ongoing SPLM/A convention where SPLM/A delegations elect SPLM/A leadership. God forbids Machar to capture the leadership of SPLM/A, but in case, he does, the memories of people of South Sudan will be plugged back to those dark years and the infamous incidents such as the Death Triangle, which resulted into mass killings of innocent Dinka Bor civilians will come into live. This, the people of South Sudan cannot afford anymore, especially after undergoing through such horrendous period under Machar’s misguided ambition for power.

Machar’s misguided ambition started when his mentor, Lam Akol, a savvy and yet another treacherous politician, misled him into defecting to the enemy in Khartoum. In Khartoum, Machar found his home with the brutal ruling regime where he took a position of a Proxy Warrior of the regime under a false pretext of South Sudan President. This was ceremonially cemented at the infamous Khartoum Peace Agreement of 1997, which is popularly known as April Fools Agreement, because indeed Machar was fooled on signing that agreement.

It was there that Machar’s ambition was shot into all time high, as he once again fell victim to yet another misguided advice from a Nuer spiritual leader and fortuneteller, Nyundeng—the advice, which is shredded in mysticisms and superstitions, predicting a Nuer to become the undisputed leader of free South Sudan. Machar falsely believes he is that Nuer chosen leader destined for South Sudan leadership. He puts all his bets on this false belief, and all his actions or lack of thereof, are to accommodate this self-fulfilling prophesy.

In the process, Machar faltered badly. Of course, in scheme of things, he is part of the Government of South Sudan mess, but yet, he in particular, tries his best to undermine President Salva Kiir’s leadership by all means possible. He tries to take credit for the good deeds of the government even though there are rarely those good deeds, and he shrinks off of the bad deeds of the government. He inserts himself in almost every situation, defying his job responsibilities. In all, he is never been impressive enough.

Of course, SPLM/A convention have been long awaited. It is a right step in transforming SPLM/A into a real political entity with real democratic principles. This, however, should not be the platform for people like Machar to ascend into power. Instead, it should be the platform to strengthen good leadership. Only those with good leadership record and with the potential of exerting good leadership in the future should be given chances to capture SPLM/A leadership positions. As for those like Machar, they can only find support of corrupt and dubious characters like those in Jarch Management Group, LTD., not those of South Sudanese whom their stakes are raised high in this convention to specter of political chaos. It should be in this convention that Machar’s political ambition should be put into an end, once and for all.

Dr. Riek is and will supposed to apologized publicly for ALL the iniquities and pillage he has done to the SPLM n her people at that 1990s time of need. Although I dont hate him as a person but the unforgettable mass graves he has implanted in Jonglei is a constant chill in our mind and I doubt how he can lead the very movement he wounded permanently through the unforetold genocide!!!
All I have waited for his excellency to have been doing, was and is still due, is the unconcerted efforts to show his long waited sincere repentance to the widows n widowers and a great number of orphanaged. Besides his common title of a doctor what else has he done to junubin to shower him with blessings to lead them since his re-integration and a subsequent appraisal to the BIG rank of a vice-chairman. May anyone who back his candidacy show me one cool reason qualifying him to the chairmanship AND I gonna present three times why he is the untold sycophant of the Khartoum regime. Being complicit with Riek atrocities of 90s is tantamount to impunity of the highest order.
I will never forgive misguided ambition

      Dear Compatriots,

The recent understanding not to democratically transform the SPLM and its leadership through free and fair elections indicates the weaknesses of Salva Kiir not to acknowledge predicted defeat and to step down.

His home delegates from Warrap state and Abyei have been crying begging Dr. Riek Machar not to kick out Salva Kiir after they learnt that Dr. Machar has commanded a huge support from Convention delegates. Now they have come up with the idea to keep three deputies to the chairperson which they previously refused because they conspired against Dr. Machar.

This incompetent person in the name of Salva Kiir if kept as the Chairperson will mean that Southern Sudan should forget about winning the coming general elections. Referendum will not be conducted because Salva Kiir will be told by Beshir in the Presidency to do whatever Beshir sees fit like the recent embarrassing population census.

The party is doomed to failure if led by incompetent person known for his lack of knowledge worldwide!

Dr. Machar deserves to lead the party sicne he was the very champion of democracy itself in the Movement! He is also the very champion and educator for respect for human rights in the Movement! He is also the champion of self-determination for our people!

Those were the very principles that led him to form his own Movement in 1991 so that the old SPLM/A could adopt such principles. These very priciples were also enshrined in the 1998 Sudan National Constitution following the signing of Khartoum Peace Agreement (KPA) in 1997. His victorious merger with late Dr. Garang in January 2002 in Nairobi led to the acceptance of self-determination in the new SPLM/A Movement and followed by the signing of the first protocol on self-determination in July 2002 between SPLM/A and Khartoum government.

Dr. Machar should now be given the chance to captain the very ship of these principles which he himself championed!

However, the incompetent Salva Kiir is crying begging Dr. Machar not to contest his position because he has no qualification to find another job somewhere.

Is Salva Kiir’s future more important than the future of our people? The world will also criticize the SPLM for not exercising true democracy.

A democracy without free and fair elections is not a true democracy. I am still looking forward to the future where Dr. Machar becomes the Chairman to teach Sudan true democracy!

Down to tribal greedy dictators who are not confident in themselves to face democracy!

People who do not trsut democracy should not claim to be democratic. Dr Machar is backed because he is the only man capable to terminate Dinka failing government in Juba, to save the people of Southern Sudan. If you know that Dr Machar Fuck you guys at Bor shouldnt you make the way open for him in a democratic form that way if he loses then he have nothing to say but if he wins you the Dinkas should be good citizens or you face the consequence of your trouble. Do you think Dinka should lead again while they are Fucking themselves in Bhar el gazal like animals, what is good in Dinka leadership when their citizens are just killing themselves. This Dinka government have forgotten people of Nuba Mountain, Blue nile,Equatoria and Upper nile, west BGP, support to Dr Machar is a wise thing to do for the deprived groups may have hope in the new system and also to pave way for democracy. Democracy means there got to be people like you who will not like machar and others like me who would like him for a change even if he is garbage.
The peace claim in Southern Sudan is nothing other than Dinkas coming with their bottomless desires to eat drink alcohol and sleep all day and every day turning southern Sudan to a hell with no gurdian over the suffering nation.
The reason Dr Machar was made vice president is because Dr Garang and Kiir Knows that he have a balance of power that can rock and ready to rock at any time.
If you are born to rule you should know how to treat other people nicely, or else you are totally not born to rule but a self claimed pathogene to rule.

Change ,Change ,Change even a bad one is better than the one we have. This is not to say that you Dinkas are totally bad there are a lot of good Dinkas for that matter Nhial Deng Nhail is also recomended . He may form a government that every body will chair.

You have to understand here that I am not say Dr Machar or Nuer are better than Dinka, Dinka may even be batter than Nuer. The Nuer since they took over power in upper Nile till today they do not chair with the people in this region, Dr machar must understand that the way the Nuers are running government in what they Call greater uppernile is pathetic, he better come with real change or it will not be too long for him to stay.

    Long live SPLM for Change

Mr. Perfect or Awful, your abusive language shows how illiterate you are just like your hero Riak.

From your views the only point you are making is that Riak (Nuer) should be let lead despite his record of failures in the past, which shows that allowing him to do so will be disastrous, not only to the Dinka as you are suggesting but to the Nuer themselves and the people of Southern Sudan. Please be adviced that eventhough Riak is a Nuer, he will still be incapable of delivering sugar to the Nuer even as leader. SPLM/A was founded by wisemen with vision and a group of wise, willing, and, determined supporters all across Southern Sudan. Unfortunately there is only one man with determined supporters who are left, and that man is Salva who you Riak loyalists refer to as "incompetent". Many Southerners see Riak as a traitor, a man who would not dare to take a blow for his child, and a misguided fool by the prophecy of Ngundeeng.

Here is what you Riak supporters should do. Instead of writting simple phrases charged with childish anger, why not compaign and tell the people of Southern Sudan why should Riak be the Chairperson. Explain his attributes to the People’s Movement and his accomplishments in relation to the work he has done in the name of Southerners. That’s a way an educated person like you makes sense, not in a grotesque imaginary your statements reflect. You are attempting a language of intimidation but you know it will not work. Often your Nuer people leap to the air, divert side to side holding spears and shields when starting a fight, all these in an attempt to intimidate opponent but the fight eventually still goes on despite all that energy foolishly wasted.

Your warn of future consequences if Riak does not get the nomination of SPLM Chairpersonship is premature. In 1990s Riak defected and came back with evilish agenda of trying to massacre all the Dinka Bor of the Jonglei State and fail thanks to the wise and determined men of the Southern Sudan Army. He then rejoin the Movement and he was let in. The reason he was grant access to re-entered, was because even as phathetic and useless as he was and as he still is, his face represent some majority faces. However, his supporters should not worry, as he will perhaps emerge sometimes as a leader of the South Sudan. If it eventually happen, you also should be prepared to suffer another sugarless long period.

Well Salva Kiir a few days ago disclosed a merger between SPLA and SAF against marginallised freedom fighters of JEM, and the next day his own army and people in Abyei were killed by his new friend SAF, is that a man for marginallised people, void of principles.

Dont panic you Dinkas knows how to play arround with the Nuers, like now because you have observed the sure defeat of Kiir , your are advertising for many VP positions and this Nuers will be happy because they like to be second that way they are too close to smell it.

You have a grudge that was forgiven by John Garang against Riak, Salva Kiir was Garang Hit man his charges of inhumanity are pending his good srvice to people of southern sudan by peacefuly adhering to fair election.

Dr Machar should never back down to prove to his opponent that he is the man needed for change.

Thank you Mr. steve for the article you wrote about our vice president of southern sudan government.infact there are other people like you who know what Riek did in the time you started up there.
"if a wife committed adultery she will not be is
loved any more like before", he is, he is the one, they are, they are the ones and i believe he cann’t think of it,they cann’t think of it.
He the one claiming himself to be next SPLM chairman can not make it to next time needed by us we Marginalised people,
if southerners do so they don’t remember the agonising time caused by Riek and his friend Lam which they experienced, it will be mistake and they will be doing mistakes and end up like Somalia, and Congo .
After all non of them do not read these articles, comments and opinions posting on this web which i believe might bring some changes to Sudan."I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them"

Your Words are awkward and more personal than the actual political debate that an intellectual person capable in politics could ever do. You are too naive to yourself than to make unrealistic comment against someone each of you may not criticise. Look, Dr.John is a hero for engineering the movement, but does not mean that his political ambvision was precise to all people. There have been so many ups and downs in his day to day step all over across the southern people. However, you should also acknowledge the fact that he was not the only one in the movement. There were more than Dr. John who stood firm until later days. Dr. Riek has been one of them including you guys because we all have been part of the turmoil. If you don’t think so, that mean you are politically incapable. That must come to viewing your comments, and put you to one category with those who don’t know the politics. To assure you, you are talking about Dr. Riek Machar from every now and then that he is a bad person, he is not a good leader, and politically not fit to lead the party. However, there are other Nuer whom you may not know, and are not in the favor of democratic government like Dr. Riek does to the southern sudanese people. It is you to suffer in the next round of fight for the other Nuer politicians who does not respect democratic system as Riek does. Also, you would one day remember Dr. Riek that you don’t respect now that he was a good leader to the people of sudan when he retired in politics.

I would urge that you should go to school of thought and use appropriate judgement than to misjudge people for personal interest. Your personal interest would not lead you to a successful journey in politics, but will only make you decietful and vissionless and irrespectable people in the community. Think about Dr. John he died in a plane crush which took other people’s lives. However, for his own deeds some people condarm him to death than to remember him as a hero because he killed a lot of people in his time. The people who had experienced the suffering were minority people in the movement. Than to do a political approach to those minorities, he only encouraged his tribe men to commit ethnic cleansing which did not reflect the true vision of the movement. Please, don’t make us angry again this time. The only thing we can do is to show respect to our leaders for everyone of us will come to leadership level. Also, critism is good, but it should be held in a debatable way. But if you attack people because of their ethnic background, we would still be in a boiling situation which would only create unrest

Don’t let your mind be confused by By-Passers,
SPLM had A Vision which is clear and achievable in real sense. Slogan forth Peace Love, Unity and Liberty and Freedom Progress are in SPLM/A which took arms voluntarily for a cause.
Scarifies have been made and many lost their lives, If they were still a live quitter could have either be silence or stay away from politic of the South.
Lt.Gen .His Exe.Salva Kiir got much credit from Southerners to Lead to intended Vision.
His Exe.had declares Corruption as his main enemies that make is administration to skeleton.
Kiir owed the SPLM Chairmanship even for 20 Years because He had defected to NIF for Food and Money stained with Blood for Southerners. He even stays at Nimule when NIF-Bashir was in Pagri targeting SPLA lonely strong hold and pot of resistance.

The non-nationalistic and betrayal move by Dr. Riek Machar’s support based counties of Dok Nuers, Unity State, is too late and insignificant in its scope. The move confirmed, among other things, Dr. Machar’s lust for power.
The prospect of Riek becoming leader of SPLM has been damaged beyond any repair with this last minute political rebellion by few Nuers who want to use the powerful name of Nuer to sound as if it was unanimously supported by the Nuer Nation. The political advisers of Dr. Machar failure to work on their assignment on such a vital issue show how inexperienced politically they were.

A politically wiser leader always knows where s/he went wrong and learned from mistakes but Dr. Machar, given all the positions he has held as: SPLM/A-PMHC, Khartoum Peace Agreement (KPA)-president of the South Sudan Co-ordination Council and Adviser to president of the Sudan and now deputy chairman of SPLM and vice-president of GOSS, never learned nor will he ever know the arts of political maneuverings.

Dr. Machar’s problem emanated from the 6th January, 2002 Unity declaration between SPDF and SPLM/A known as Nairobi Declaration. The declaration was not a merger of equal factions, it’s widely considered as capitulation of Dr. Machar and his SPDF to SPLM/A. Had the merger been between two equal partners Dr. Machar would automatically been the second in command of SPLM/A and the power struggle consuming the party-SPLM would be avoided.

Dr. Machar lacks long-term vision like any other leaders; the case in point is the collapsed Ugandan peace talks. Can a leader of a nation of his caliber be taken for a ride until the very end without detecting the loophole of the process? What does this signify? Didn’t Dr. Machar good intention embarrass the whole nation of South Sudan and the GOSS in particular?

Dr. Machar and his supporters shouldn’t make fools of themselves. With due respect, Dr. Machar is weak and can not run a nation still in war footing unless the South Sudanese want the hard won CPA to go down the drain like other agreements (Addis Ababa agreement, Khartoum Peace Agreement). Dr. Machar political niche is deputizing but would also be an excellent senior service officer under someone directives. He was good under John Garang and Salva but poorly when he the boss as in SSIM/A and SSCC.

Dr. Machar like his former boss, Dr, Garang is being accused by human rights watch for crimes against humanity his forces might have committed and could at any time (I hope not) be extradited to war crimes court although the Hague wouldn’t be the venue as these alleged crimes were said to be before 2002.

Likewise Nhial Deng is only accompanying the Truckers, Nhial was appointed to be Minister of Regional Cooperation-(Foreign Affairs) but to the sudden death of hid right Father-Late Dr. John Garang, He \developed a long mourning till He end up quitting his position which is came for it NOT for SPLM/A Chairmanship.

Taban Deng Gai and Lam Akol and bird of the same feathers, let them flew to their house, and stay away from South politic. Because their mouth are full of poison.

SPLM is not a dumping area for the failures who failed to promote the SPIRIT of SPLM Vision.

James Wani and Pagan Amum need to campaign for the deputies of SPLM/A/

There are other big commanders keeping themselves away from politic or avoiding, Why are hiding your faced, this is the time to know why you fought, no More War only Politic is at track/

This is an irresponsible article I have ever come across so far, from Steve turned rebel priest among his so many articles that he had written, although in comparison he had on so many occassions tried to play into the hands of the people who would appease any thing to do with painting any leader in south sudan who happen to be non-Dinka in bad picture.
Steve to my knowledge is a wondering idiot kwaaja,he has no knowledge whatsoever about the implications and gravity of his ill thought article.
Hush!you should know by know the system you so condone is corrupt and need for revolution is in the opting in many mines not only to Riek’s,but if those who brought the idea of illuminating Riek in the first place now come lobbying him to withdraw his chairmanship candidacy, because of fear of impending defeat of the compromised and corrupt system, then it is fine so long as he remain the next to the chair, but that is not where it stop, change as a continues process will continue glowing, and sure the days are coming when you will see the very person you so hate cammanding southern sudan, despite useless comments thrown in here and there for personal issues rather than real concern for finding place in the world with the right leader.

It is not to put an end but is just the beginning of what lies a head,or else comment like this will only worsen the situation on the already tense tribal politic, and the only regret is that a foreigner turned rebel is the one blowing the trumpet of doom this time around,Steve Parteno is that foreigner he did to the best of some emmotional guys,it is too bad for our dear south.

        Man,
It will be wiser if you can point out where Steve has gone wrong in what he wrote. He was just pointing out the facts. Many people are so unpatriotic that they called patriotic people as rebels. What Riek did does not need an explaination to understand it. It was clear to everyone except those who were not born. Have you ever heard of the conversation between Bashiir and Riek in Khartoum? After observing Riek, along with his supporters, for a long time he came up with a conclusion that if he was fighting against Nuer alone (excludes other tribes), he would pour sugar from Bentiu to Khartoum and Nuer would just follow that route. I don’t know what his reaction was, but Gatwech (his right-hand man & campaigner) will tell you more about this. The nature of our country has advantaged Riek a lot. It happened that a significant number of people were traitors in one way or another. The best leader of these traitors must be a traitor. This explains why Riek has a good number of supporters. People like Gatwech make statements that are contradictory to what really happened. Riek was power hungry, and he tried to topple a leader. They called this democracy. Riek put himself under the complete control of Bashiir who did not want to hear about freedom of marginalised people. He was defenceless. They called it ’self-determination for South Sudan’. Isn’t it ridiculous? I have not been comfortable (and I never will) with the presence of Riek in the government especially in SPLM he betrayed. If no effort is made to remove him, time will get rid of him. When I heard of the news that he was contesting for chairmanship, there was a little hope. I knew he was going to lose, and he would not get a chance to be a vice chairman. This would have moved him further away from presidency. He is now lucky and he should thank the delegates for retaining the old system.

There are these other fools who are claiming to be Riek supporters, it look like they have not read any thing about all that were done here in Juba by that same Riek. He (Riek) is the only man who creates all the havocs that happaned last decate in Equatoria land.
Equatorians have seen that themselves, now he is trying to creates the worser one.
I don’t want to mention it, but if you elects him right there you are going to see it yourself.

You have been flagged as a “puppet” looking for recognition from those who are trying to dominate others. It is going to be tougher for you and your associates to achieve your selfish-interests. Remember that your cheap appeals will soon hunt you.
