Sudanese First vice-president says “peace is getting close”

KHARTOUM, April 14, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The first vice-president, Ali OSman Mohamed Taha, has said peace is getting close and the government will not accept any mediation in the issue of the status of the capital Khartoum.

He said: “Our stance is clear to everybody and we will not accept either mediation or papers”.

While he was in Naivasha, Taha told Al-Ra’y al-Amm newspaper “We are not in a hurry nor we want to procrastinate. However, we will achieve peace soon.”

He added that the government delegation was striving to reach an agreement on the remaining issues and said: “Our approach is obstinacy with no negligence.”

He stressed the government’s will to guarantee the rights of non-Muslims in the capital and all over Sudan, as well as their civil liberties.

He said the greatest guarantee agreed upon so far was the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement participation in all state bodies, “the presidency, and all civil and security bodies.”
