Lagu’s family celebrates acquittal of corruption charges

May 6, 2010 (WUNROK) — Family members, relatives and friends to former President of the high executive council of southern Sudan, Retired General Joseph Lagu, continue to celebrate acquittal of corruption charges against their beloved sister and daughter Josephine Lagu.

Josephine Joseph Lagu was late last year accused of involvement in the embezzlement of funds allegedly wired into her private bank account instead of official bank account for Students studying in Uganda under scholarship of the government of South Sudan through its ministry of education, science and technology.

Accused of financial fraud and dishonesty, she was relieved of her duties as undersecretary in the service ministry of education, science and technology in order to allow the court to conduct thorough investigations and judgment without immunities.

Throughout investigations period, Lagu claimed innocence against the charges and vowed to defend herself against accusing fingers. Notwithstanding her assertions, majority within the ministry blamed her for involvement in the transfer.

"There is no smoke without fire. There must have been a deal because I do not know why she was involved in the transfer leaving accountants of the ministry," said an official who declined to be named in December 2009.

"Proper investigation must be conducted to unearth the truth and judgment be made accordingly without compromise regardless of the status of the victims," the official adds.

However, on Friday, April 30th 2010, Josephine proved her innocence when High Court in Juba cleared all the charges for lack of proof.

Sebit Alfred Wilson, who said to have been a long time friend to Josephine family, in an interview with Sudan Tribune from Khartoum, said he knew Josephine was going to be declared innocent because, her conduct, since youth do not allow such behaviors.

"I knew she would be freed because she has never been accused of such practices even within the family while young. We grew up together in the same town and went to the same school but has never heard her accused of such practices even pens at schools," he explained.

Sebeit further said she had been falsely accused in order to damage her reputation as well as name of her father and whole family was dragged into it and so it became a political circus. There was no another reason but intention to tarnish image of such great and peaceful family, he said praising her courage during the investigation period.

Another official who preferred not to be named said the stratagem had been developed in order to remove Josephine from her position.

"Those who did it must be held accountable," he said adding "we all have to understand that South Sudan is our region; GOSS is our government and south is our home and that all of us belong to it".

Let the justice prevail in the South, now the democracy is working positively. The time when people were apprehended with no trial has passed and we are heading to a new era were police and normal civilian are all the same in eye of law.

Law must be like mathematic formula where you start calculating the solving question from the beginning with the procedures to follow, the same way the law have work on people step by step.

God blessed South Sudan, the courts system, the military system, education, health system and so many more system that needs total justice for all. Siding, tribalism, nepotisms, regionalism and political party’s alienisms are indeed the bad move that destroyed.

      Bro Mabor;

Ms Lagu is an ecuatorian lady, less priviledged in SPLM standard wight of tribalism. She has been appointed tobe there for obvious reasons, if not to decorate Dinka-SPLM/A GOSS.She is the only and lone official of GOSS that stand a trial of corruption, while the Oil Revenue shevelled to foreign banks via bogus coffins, not through the common channels of banking transactions.

Secondly, how come this case reached the Juridcial Chambers, that threw it away, without a proper documents assisting the allegations against Ms Lagu?????It shouldn’t reach this phase of the juridicial procedure unless, there are some elements working in the darkness against her and may be against whoever not a Dinka.Do you understand what i mean?

There is no fair and independent juridical system in Sudan, neither in the South of Sudan, period. It’s a theatric scene to cover-up the GOSS failure to encounter the parasitic corruption among its organs and departments.

The Goss intendd to use Ms Lagu as an escape goat,or as a cheap propaganda that the justice is intact, and there is no body above the law What a shame!!??

I warn those whom play whith the fire, especially the SPLM/A Pioneers, that their time of managing the SouthSudan struggle is over, and its the New-Southerners who are more educated and moderate to carry on,like Miss Lagu. The old folks of SPLA/M had ripped the fruit of their patriotic duties, and the buck should stop here....

Josephine Lagu was a victim of internal defamation and image damaging in the ministry of education science and technology. there are some elements who think that they should monopolize everything especially if money is involved. they didnt want her there in the ministry so they smear her with false accusation, so that her post will emptied for them.

If it a matter of corruption, there are the real culprits in the GOSS and who left it due to their involvemnt in the that practice. there are tens of examples, the first was Author Akuen the former finance minister in the GOSS who stole the funds allocated to buy cars for the goverment from the golden arrow(Alsam alzaby) company in Khartoum. the actual price for the car was $40 thousands but he inflated it to $90 thousand and took that $50 thousand for the kids and madam. when the smoke appeared in the sky, and pressure mounted his immunity was rebuked and he was under house arrest and to prison but his Aweil associates came to rescue and freed him from prison by force.

another example was the white Nile bank , in which some GOSS officals drew millions from the bank without guarantees and when asked to pay back they default. the bank was left penniless and had to follow the new systems of bailout by granting it 25-10 million of GOSS money so that it can be operational again.

A third example was Stephen Madut bak president Kiir ’s political adviser who was caught in Heath row airport in London trying to sneak $3 million in a bag to UK.

Kuol Athian Mawien may ring a bell, he was the former finance minister in the GOSS. until now we dont know exactly what happen to those grain money of $200 million which was lost and no document can be found to show how it was spend.originally the sum that was allocated to buy the maize for the ten states was $2billion in which $200 was paid by the government, but to whom there is no clear documentation.

So can anyone tell me why obvious causes of theft and corruption of government funds stolen in the daylight went unvetted and the culprits were known and moving freely in juba?was there something called Anti- corruption commission?what is justice Makuei lueth doing about all those corruption cases?

from above there is a conclusion that , some officials in the GOSS are fat cats who can funnel millions to their pockets in clear cut while they fear no consequences whatsoever.

Josephine Lagu was just victimize while the fat cats were leisurely enjoy themselves because they are protected from the law from above.

      Dear all,

I doubt the Independence of the judicial system in Southern Sudan if Josephine is now acquitted. There were many proves including the disappearance of the laptop of the education attache’ who is charge of Student affairs in Uganda.

If it is true that she is acquitted then there will be no way that those involved including her collaborator Mr.flex who is now in Uganda can be tried.

I argue the lawyer and the presiding judge to reconsider his ruling and to further look into those charges.

Josphine squandered hundreds of Thousand of Dollars into her personal account; leaving hundreds of Southern Sudanese Students school feesless. She is more than guilty; and so are many others in the education ministry.

Those who also stole millions of Dollars are much quilty; although we commonly aske why they have not been taken to courts.

I have seen those who squandered millions in fake grains deals; back to Juba and in bad shape. Thank God their stolen treasury is gone and are back; begging; the way they specialized in it in Kenya capital Nairobi before CPA.

Its time the GOSS ties things up so that people learnt to work hard and reap what they sow; instead of doing less and enjoy millions; Unjust!!!

If Southerners have a GOD; the Corrupt MUST lead the road to hell!!!

            Dear all,

let the judiciary swallow the whole cow for the tail will not be a problem. I mean lets, the judiciary start from the huge money of oil transported in coffin to foreign banks by the prominent Kleptomaniac clenchs, such that afterward it turns to josphine Ladu. I don’t entertain such one sided Judiciary of GOSS that issue immunity to criminal and punish the innocents citizens.

      CONGRATULATION Dr. Josephine.

Much as we all continue to carry for the oppression agaist the Arabs in Khartoum, the Black Arabs of southern Sudan also oppresses other citizens.
Dr. Josephine has suffered scramble for position within the ministry of education science and technology just to take off her position and all those new strategies she designed for the effective development southern education system.
Right from the time Dr. Josephine entered the ministry, she had acted as a barrier to unlawful flow of money within the ministry by breaking the chain among the minister and his ghost sons. Thus, this created enmity leading to her suspension over allegation for corruption so that the chain gets back to the gear and the pedal hence the bicycle on the move carrying the ministry’s money to unknown destination.
Please Dr., we hope that God gives you more courage, trust and strength to develop more strategies for the people of south Sudan including the families of even those who are struggling to betray you only to get reach but have nothing for the young generations of this nation.
Looooooooooong live Dr. Josephine, long live education in south.

      Ladu- Cairo
