South Sudan minister describes killings in Fangak as a "massacre”

By Ngor Arol Garang

February 11,2011 (KHARTOUM) - James Kok Ruea, a minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management at the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) on Friday described the deaths caused by clashes between rebels and the South Sudan army in Fangak county of Jonglei state as "a massacre."

The minister made the comments in an interview with Sudan Tribune two days after armed groups identified as loyal to General George Athor Deng and forces belonging to the Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA), the southern army, clashed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Around 105 people are thought to have died in the clashes.

Both Athor and the SPLA denied launching the attack. Neither has accepted responsibility for initiating the fighting and have blamed each other for the clashes. Athor’s spokesman in an interview with Sudan Tribune on both Wednesday and Thursday accused the SPLA of initiating attack against their forces in three different locations in the area and said they were acting in self defend.

The SPLA denied the charge and accused Athor’s forces of launching the first attack and laying several landmines. He said that SPLA forces had activated the mines resulting in the destruction of vehicles and causing casualties.

Speaking to Sudan Tribune from the area on Friday, James Kok Ruea, minister of Humanitarian Affairs and disaster management in the government of South Sudan described the killing as "a massacre."

"I am now talking to you from my area, our people have been massacred by George Athor because they are supporters of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and the leadership of the government of South Sudan. They have been uprooted from their homes and many of them mostly innocent civilians, especially women and children have lost their lives", said minister Kok in an interview with Sudan Tribune on Friday.

The minister said Athor had captured Fangak on 9 February but the SPLA took it back on 10 February, after what he described as fierce fighting resulting in the loss of many lives. He declined to give figures saying the dead were still being buried but said that “many lives some of whom were innocent civilians mostly children and women in the cross fire".

Phillip Aguer, spokesman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, in a separate interview confirmed 105 people were killed. Reports from the area indicate that 105 people from both sides have killed: 39 civilians, 24 police and 42 from Athor’s men.

Kok, who hails from the area, said Fangak was home to roughly 200,000 people who have now been displaced to neighboring communities.

Everyday under the corrupt SPLM there will be a massacre, unless the dinka savages are put on the leash and stop looting and raping, there will be no peace in the south

      Dear Oshay!

Regardless of where you come from and whatever it meant for you to said this, it is un acceptable. You need to think reasonablely. It doesn’t means that people should be killed if they expressed themselves by voting in favor of whom they like. You make me hate you today because your comment is evil. Even if Athor is your father at least you should not support him by targeting the civilian’s population if he wanted to attacked the government.

      I hope you understand!

It is bad to see lives lost again since we fought for twenty-one years, and I thought our people fought for freedom all citizens;however, our people who are ruling do not recognize the freedom for all mankind.Let put our difference aside and build our new future as the same people rather than classifying ourselves for out tribes. Kiir must play big role to unite all southerners not by favoring others who support him.Favoritism will take South war again. What you say is what I see. For those who pointed their hands on Dinkas,so I will say that your words were wrong. Please study what going on Juba before opening your mouths.Truth is good way of new vision.God helps those who do not help themselves since they had been aided.

What is mention in the above by Hon. Kok is true, itis a massacre of innocent civilians who have nothing to do with power. The presidency should carefully pay attention into this matter otherwise the numbers that we have today will inflate within hours and we all do not want that to happen.

This is a big loss to our country. Why should you kill innocent civilians Mr. Attor.

May God rest their souls in peace.

The topic is about Fangak massacre by Athor Deng but that will be up-to Goss management to stop that.

I am very impress with your recent comments this time we want to help our people not by criticizes them and we Nuer are not good to preaches differences among entire tribal instead to bring them to democratic system. This message would have goes to any Nuer who participating on this web-site because this life wouldn’t help at all.

About other community particular Dinka Bor we would not able to stop them when they are against Nuer or believes on Ngundeng prophecies that why they pay the price of when they had stolen Ngundeng food (eg Nalop seed in Arabic) (tuach thow ka in Nuer) until Ngundeng cures them by saying that my food will appeared in stealer’s teeth that why you can’t see two or three Dinka Bor people without missing teeth.

About dhol gandol as I promise other day if you remember! In duration of Ngundeng generation there was gook dhol from gaatdol Lou section’ he had pretend himself as prophet in which he have took some part of society who are believe in him.

But Ngundeng knew that he wasn’t powerful prophet, he was not from God the creature, no vision about future, and he is fearful Gok etc.

The Ngundeng doubtful on that ( Gok, dhol Gandol) Please get me clear on this sentence…. In that duration Dinka men come to see prophet Ngundeng Bong in evening hours and in the morning hours all Nuer wake-up brushing their teeth by using ( mulpuk or pukgual) that is burning ashes from cow-dang. Professionally in doing that they point their finger to cleans the tangs direct to windpipe then they poured out that solution bright red in color look like they are vomiting.

At that time the Dinka men visited Ngundeng see what going on and come in their mine that (jock e nok Nuer in Dinka language) Disease is killing Nuer; that why they are vomiting blood in which they begin to plain to attack and raided cows from Nuer; that was the initial cause between Nuer and Dinka; but one of them was doubted and doesn’t want to come back (worrying in his heart) then Ngundeng knew and call the man to him in which he told him don’t come back to attack Nuer it is danger according to story.

To make it short Dinka men when back equipped themselves come as huge to attack Nuer.

Prophet Ngundeng have seen that Dinka are coming to attack Nuer in which he Have told Gok dhol to move away from that location which was the first target to get attack by Dinka and then Gok dhol or Dhol Gandol refused to move away from that location thinking that he was powerful Gok but he was not that why Ngundeng said (loka gok mi dual-dual mi nang naath dor). Therefore Dinka come and attack the Gok dhol area in which he get defeated from Dinka.

After they reached Ngundeng location called Padieng in Lou’ Dinka never scared with God Prophet but the survivor was only man told by Ngundeng not to come back…coming back is danger!!

How? Please ask different Nuer and tell you more information rather than this.

Dinka militia George Athor was equiped and directed by some dinka elements in GOSS to murders all nuers residenced Pangak. Have you seen it? It is really a massive killing and numbers of people died exceed 105 and about 97 bodies captured at malakal’s Bam shore on the river. This is genocide. There is something fishy in GOSS system.

  • 12 February 2011 07:36, by Bol Deng

Where are Gatwech Tut and Kim Deng? because they have been supporting Athor Deng.

    • 12 February 2011 10:04, by Nhomlawda

Gen. George Athor Deng Dut is absolutely wrong to create a rebellion for his own mistakes. Athor declared during his compaigns in Bor that he was going to rebel and kill people if he was not elected. Everybody in Bor Area knew he was going to rebel after failing election which everybody was certain he was going to fail, but why intelligent agents did not do their jobs and SPLA failure to capture him before rebelling was what I have no idea and need to be answered.
Athor Deng did not prepare for defeat in Governorship election. He had always made his rebellion as second option clear where he compaigned. Athor knew election is not like military decisions were you dictate issues but he voluntarily handed over his military credentials and became a civilian.
If he knew he had enemies who will not make him sleep at home when he is a civilian with no powers, why in the first place did he prepare to leave the military - his zone of comfort?
No Dinka of sound mind can support Athor elections poor calculation and his decision to rebel which he actually did before voting began.
Athor had good military record in the SPLA but he had spoiled it like what those of Kerubino K. Bol, Williams Nyuon and Arok Thon Arok did during liberation struggle.
It takes several years to build reputation and a few days to detroy it.
Athor Deng repeated the same mistake did by Akuot Atem Mayen in 1982 elections where he threatened Bor people with unspecified consequences should he failed in elections. Indeed, he failed to succeed in those elections and became a renegade politician. Akuot election hangovers made him to rebel during SPLA/M formation and became a nyagat with Samuel Gai Tut.
Now Athor is just like any other criminal in South Sudan despite his past successes.

To all lou Nuer and pou/greater fangak.
this was obvious plans organize by Dinka a Group of people with in Goss,to use fangak as field to fight George athor, the groups include - gier chuang- kuol manyang who order youth to killed lou -Nuer because there have been a peace since during voting exercise, pluse the rest, these group in bor don’t wan peace in jonglei state, they even blindfold H,E salva, while planning to overthrown, why? keeping Gier chuang in the Goss?

to your inform, organize your self since bor don’t wan peace and led the fight be fought in bor town instead Nuer land otherwise you are not lou Nuer any more.

  • 12 February 2011 11:25, by Jongkuch

I think negotiating with criminals creates even more problems. The Government of South Sudan needs to move quickly and arrest Athor. If the government cannot deal swiftly with thugs like Athor, the safety of civilians will awlways remains a challenge. We do not want to hear about Athor’s attack. This one is enough. Somebody got to stop him.

    to Gen Athor Deng
at first everybody here and there was siding with you because each and everyone who is a know-how did really know that there were some independent candidates and other political parties fielding against the ruling immature SPLM party and mature NCP, who had won the april elections. like you yourself you overwhelmingly outdid you archopponent Kuol Manyang and NCP opponent Joseph Duer.
unfortunately, you do almost always execute your military actions in the wrong places.
for example when you reacted last year to borism provocations of Brig.Ateny Manyok who used to intimidate you while you were in your own house at khorfulus doing R&R, you went and attacked Dolieb Hills killing Nuer sons of Fangak who could be the first and foremost to join you if you might have gone and attacked Bor where Kuol Manyang was or Juba where Gier Chuang was and thus the failure of your call.
to add an insult to an injury, the ceasefire you signed could be the best opportunity for you to come and say condolences to people of Fangak and then you could plan a final trip to overrun Bor where this ceasefire is being thrown cold water and bewitched day and night by Gier Chuang. to the contrary, you came and urinated on your expensive mattress whose consequences became now forever enmity between you and innocent people who were supporting you most in the first place includign the Gabriel Tang ’s children. now you have woken up a sleeping dog in its safe haven. please run out of Sudan or else your days are over.
    by nuerby.

      Bravo Nuer,

Stop supporting wrongdoers/militia and you will be fine.

    • 12 February 2011 23:59, by Nhomlawda

      Bravo Nuer,

Hahahahaha! I like the way you expressed it.
Last time, Akuot Atem rebelled against John Garang and he became a leader in Fangak area. George Athor rebelled against Gier Chuang and Kuol Manyang and he became a hero in Fangak. Those are the consequences of supporting rejects and Fangak should live with it.

  • 13 February 2011 10:40, by Bravo Nuer

    bravo! Gen Salva Kiir Mayardit
and Gen James Kok Ruea for wisely taking an ultimate decisions to deploy fearless and tactful Gen Gabriel Gatwech Chan (Tanginya) in Fangak area as an overall command of Jonglei North operational territories to counter an anti Republic of South Sudan as a possible aggressor like Athor.
Gen Gabriel Gatwech with his force of six thousands (6,000)men with whom he came last month from Khartoum, have already arrived at Fam el Zeraf the County Headquarters of Fangak and have taken their unshakeabnle positions.
these forces have assumed their membership to be part and parcel of the SPLA/M with an immediate effect and they are now inspecting the area before launching the hide and seek operations against Athor who is believed to be captured alive and will be made to wrestle with an SPLA bullet in the SPLA GHQS Bilpam.
these newly SPLA forces on 11/2/2011 captured four looters of Athor forces in Nyalual Jial south of Fam El Zeraf.
forthwith,Gen Gabriel sentenced them to death through firing squad as sign of firing George Athor.
Cde Gabreil came with a high calibre of armamanents, he is said to have (60)pcs of 12-7 Russian and American, (30)pcs 12-15 Iraq, (40)82 mm mortars and PKM light Machine Guns in every row of squad.
such a person has to be praised for the presence as a Paul though he was a Saul in the past but let bygones be bygones.
you Cde Kiir thinkly wisely don’t be kept busy by politicians so that they shape their own interests while you are at loss.
don’t listen again any piece of advice setting SPLA against anybody as an enemy. the threat will weaken us nationally and internationally.
do this, annex Fangak and Pigi to Upper Nile state because Bor town as a state capital is very far and to make the matter worse bor sons and daughters make the post of Governorship like kingdom yesterday from Philip Thon and Today Kuol Manyang without shame.
why changing human stool with human fart whose rotten odour remains the same.
if not annexing, dismiss Kuol Manyang from gubernatorial position and appoint anyone like James Kok,John Luk or Marial Benjamin so that Athor would give up lest he will be deserted by Nuer boys of Lou and Gawar who are supporting him now.
I hope you prove me right.

I emailed them an article as a comment three days ago and it doesn’t appear on display here on the comments column. This policy has to end or people will end up leaving this site.
