April 19, 2011 (BENTIU) – Hundreds of civilians were displaced on Tuesday in Mayom County as a result of clashes between the South Sudan army (SPLA) and militia loyal to Peter Gatdet, Unity state officials say.

Unity state’s government led by governor Taban Deng Gai strongly condemned the attacks it said were carried out by Gatdet’s militia in in Guong Payam [district] in Mayom County on Tuesday afternoon. Authorities alleged that Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) was sponsoring rebellions in oil-rich Unity state.

Oil-producing South Sudan is due to separate from the North in July following a referendum vote overwhelmingly in favour of secession earlier this year. The poll was part of a 2005 peace deal between former rebels the SPLA and Khartoum.

Gatdet fought against the SPLA, backed by Khartoum, for much of the two decade long conflict. He integrated the SPLA in 2006 but he declared on April 11 that he planned to overthrow the southern government complaining of corruption and bad governance.

State minister of Information and Communication Gideon Gatpan Thoar speaking on local radio condemned the "barbaric attack" in Guong payam of Mayom County, which saw villages completely destroyed.

He added that the Unity state government had tried on many occasions to have dialogue with the Khartoum government to track down the militia activities between the neighboring South Kordofan and Unity but no solution had ever reached.

Thoar said the NCP had illegally built up militias in South Kordofan, by allocating them to the Division 5 Hakdana and Division 14 base of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), north Sudan’s official army.

The Unity state spokesman said that his government’s response would be to immediately withdraw all northern workers out of Unity state. He said that northern workers on Unity state’s oil fields would begin being evacuated on April 19.

He however added that security would be provided to the northern oil-workers as well as local and international staff.

Oil-rich Unity state has been experiencing attacks from a number of armed militias. The Southern ruling party, the SPLM, alleges Khartoum is funding rebel groups in an effort to destabilize the south before it achieves independence on July 9. The NCP have always denied such allegations.

Before his rebellion Gatdet was the deputy commander of the SPLA division in Northern Bhar –El-Gazal. He quit the SPLA last month to take up arms against the Government of South Sudan, claiming it is corrupt and dominated by the Dinka ethnic group. Gatdet is from South Sudan’s second largest ethnic group the Nuer.

The rebel South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) is reported to have taken control of Guong Payam [district] of Mayom County on Tuesday after heavy fighting with the SPLA.

Two SPLA drivers died and four were killed by landmines in Unity state on Tuesday. The landmines exploded under four SPLA trucks on the Mayom-Abiemhnom road, Major General Koang Chuol, head of SPLA operations for division 4 in Unity state told Sudan Tribune.

The spokesman of the SSLA, Bol Gatkuoth Kol, a former MP in the southern parliament, confirmed that his group had planted the mines and said that the attack was a warning for the citizens to move away from Mayom town before real conflict begins.

He said the SSLA had planted mines across Unity State and especially in Mayom County, which he says is the first territory the SSLA plans to control.

Kol said that the mine explosions were not an accident but a militarily operation to warn SPLA forces in the area that war has been declared against South Sudan’s army.

Planting landmine in their hometown as a way to warn local civilains? This sound like a good form of liberating your people...specially to vicious illiterates like Gatdet and his men.

People of Unity State and specially Mayom County are going to be the ones who bear the brunt of the war initiated by these greedy idiots. If they want to overthrow the government as they claim, why don’t they come to Juba where Pres. Kiir and the government live.

They are bought by the NCP to commit attrocities against their own inocent people! What a shame!

This is a result of bad practices of murdering other fellow southern tribes who are not from Dinka. Gadet’s step is just the beginning. South Sudan will not be free untill Dinka are chased away from the whole of South Sudan. Let them go back to Mading Bor. Kuol Manyang should be awarded with a bullet at the slightest chance. Those in Bor are capable of carrying out that order. Let the rest enjoy as their buttocks rumble. I need another handgun, if you are a revolutionist and you are able to send me a good pistol with amunitions, please do that for the freedom of our beloved South Sudan. Enough is enough. One tribe should not murder every body while we are watching. Death to JONKOZ murle22@yahoo.com

      • We South Sudanese must understand the regulations and esteem them , the question is, how can/would the leaders of Southern Sudan allow this incident occur in the first place? Before its be converted into chaos. Lucks of leadership and freedom corruption I suppose, which lead Peter Gatdet’s rebellion. The main obsession is that we are not forget all unconstructive that occur in the past divergence of the South Sudan civil war and that why it guide into conflict. My point is this (forgive and forget the past negatives in order to move forward as a united Southern Sudan). Let prevent our self-interest or tribe-interest and let focus on our hallucination for next generation. In order to move forward we should all say (no room for tribe corruption, and conflict). Those who broke should be rebuke according to Southern Sudan laws. Again No room for goodwill.

      Omoni,

this is the same statement that equatorians used to say during the War. They said is Dinka vs. Arab issue. Now you are repeating the same statements. These rebels going back to Khartoum are trying to take everybody’s freedom away including equatorians. So Equatorians need to join and defend their freedom too. Don’t exclude them and later complain that the SPLA is dominated by one tribe.

Next time Kir will also run to Khartoum as he was form solider of Khartoum. Be smart and learn to solve issues by dialogue like smart Equatoria people. I do not know why the bloody fuck him Peter Gatdet got his soldiers so fast like this to launch attack againt the SPLA. Some people are real stooge who can not think deeply before they start doing something. I am surprise the so-called spokesman gave a statement like a jihardist/terrorist who plant bombs and then speaks publicly that he did it to kill people. What a hect!

What i know is that this war will be wone by the migthy SPLA, Gatdet will be dead any time especially if he risks to go to the front line unless he hides in Khartoum like George Athor. MAUMAU

    Dear SPLM/A,

The only thing that will trash our people in this world is illiteracy, some think that when they fought, they will be given a position but in this world,it is a crime and nothing that could be exchange with the crime other then jail for live.

Now,the government of Salva Kiir should chose from being overthrow or to root out these militias in the South Sudan and let called it a last solution and i will be more than happy when something like that should be accepted.
During the war,the South was not weak like this because the militias always deserved what they want; a peace or skirmish.

Now, i can see why there are many rebels before our independent. They are looking for recognition after they destroy the civilians in Unity state and across the South Sudan. Stupidity is the only thing that will trash our people. Let face these militias of mayom declaration.period!

Defection is not the solution to change the system howere, we can change the system within.so i m against who ever has that wise. But Mr. Kiir must change something with in his leadership otherwise more will join Athor or Gatdet which would make things tougher in near future. Taban was defeated twice in last year election, from state parliament and governorship race, Mr. Kiir failed to respect the right of voters. No doubt to me that Kiir had made that dirty game against Nuer, but things will change and they will be against his leadership in stead.

Despite of 99% of Dinkas are against Nuer particularly Riek Machar..

Let’ just wait for july end. I believe South will look in different share than today.

        Manyang,
Why declaring war against GOSS led by Salva? Why not wait until independent South Sudan is achieved? It is just a matter of some two months to get out. Why do you people like to fight when Arabs is at the back or in the middle? Are you afraid? You are fighting GOSS so that you get external or Arabs support? Dinka and Nuer are two men in this land as you think. If they are two men of this country then led them be patient until the Independent is achived. You will be left to fight by equatorians because it is the only game you enjoyed most.

Idiotic general ever. how can you intent to harm your people whom are the primary source of your army by planting mines?
If your desire was to get rid of the current government because of its malpractices, why dont you wait till July 9 when the SPLM will be on its own against multiparties and make your case known, thus get support from those parties. Dinka Government of course has been lazily looting, underpaying soldiers, greedy, nepotism and things like that but you need to be mature enough to see things beyond your nose. preventing southern sudan to become independent now is not the solution to solve Dinka problem. it just increases the notion that Southern Sudanese can’t govern themselves (in which I and you are included). do you think you will be a president after you prevent south from breaking away? think about it. many tried in the past (including yourself) and nothing worked. why dont we go for the working solution now then obstructing it and see what will happen in the long run?
Gatdet, people like you are unpredictable. what interest you is not what interests many. short term gains cannot be the justifications for your rebellion. I would suggest you stay in the bush without firing any bullet until the country is officially declared(which is the interest of many). and then solve your problems later as a leader of certain party within Southern Sudan.

Please this isn’t about tribal lines. if it were to be like the way some of you idiots try to make this as Nuer vs Dinka. well, SPLA would no longer exist if 65 or so forces decided to break off according to their tribal allegiance. and then other tribes 15% will also stand alone.

I don’t know where you got your statistics, maybe it is a dream from the devil Ngundeng that make you believe Nuer make up 65% of the SPLA forces. For simplicty, let say your claim is true. It does not mean anything since that 65% has never attended any formal military training. It is not an effective force at all.

On other hand, the 20% that constitute the SPLA forces are well trained and diehards who can defeat any force in Sudan. Think back to 1990s, what percentage do you think the Torit Faction had after Riek broke away with the rest? What ever percentage the SPLA Torit faction had, stood its ground and they defeated both Sudanese army along with Riek Machar forces and the rest of militias. History will vindicate that the SPLA 20% has defended and will defend the people of South Sudan aganist internal and external enemies.

A staggering pace that reflected the disarray of Garang’s subordinates encountered in most of the areas under attack. Torit, Kapoeta, Yei... were on the verge of cowardice and panic mongering evacaution until the common enemy overran almost all the liberated areas without any resistance from Garang’s SPLA/M-Torit faction.

Many areas including major towns: Torit, Kapoeta, Mading Bor... were recaptured and/or surrendered to the common enemy as a result of split. The remaining few garrisons and towns under control of Torit faction were on the verge of panic of evacuation either to Uganda or Kenya refugee camps as well.

Dear Bonifacio Taban Kuich and all Unity State’s citizens.

It is true that, Khartoum government are so jealousy about the independence of Southern Sudan and there is nothing will prevent Southern Sudanese people to have it. I am real getting sick to hear all the times about Peter Gatdet Yaka and George Athor Deng Dut in the Nile regions. Yes, Khartoum government are sponsoring those rebels against GOSS and the people of Southern Sudan, but my question is that, why it is so easily for Nuer guys to join any rebel.? Could that, tell Southern Sudanese people, the Nuer society have lost the trust from the rest of the societies in Southern Sudan.?

There is no doubt the Southern Sudan independence will be achieve by all mean even if all these collabaration fought side by side with the Southern Sudan’s Army they will not win but they are going to be very a shameful in the eyes of all Southern Sudanese people. The name of Southern Sudan is big than these traitors Peter Gatedet Yaka and George Athor Deng Dut. We are going to look closely to see how the Nuer communities will handle Gatdet Yaka, because this is not about Nuer problem any way however, it is their Son and they must deal with him properly. If anyone belief that, there is a corruption in GOSS why they runs to Khartoum government for what reason.? The corruption can actual started from Peter Gatdet Yaka because he was one of those who distributed money to the SPLA and after when he left to Khartoum, many SPLA are complaining the money he cut and now claim he disfirst from the SPLA because of corruption, please give me a break.

What lesson did Southern Sudanese have learn now.? I think the suggestion lesson, the Southern Sudanese have absolutely experience unusually behaviors since the SPLA Movement bagan and I think it is about the desparation of needing leadership which is wrong Idea. These guys apparently, they are thinking that, the only way for them to be heard is by forming rebel against the foundation which have been exist and quite frankly, they took the case of Riek Machar Teny as a good example, unfortunately, people are not going to have that kind of lucky which Dr. Riak Machar Teny have had been get away with.

Another lesson maybe, the New Young nation and the ROSS would have to avoid Nominating someone who have been against foundation, because this is seem to be the really issue in Southern Sudan. Gatdet himself he don’t like to see Paulino Matip Nhial being given highest rank in the SPLA and not him meanwhile, George Athor Deng Dut alos don’t want to see Dr. Riek Machar Teny to lead him again, these are the facts and should not be ignore thus, it would have been a good Idea if Dr. Riak Machar Teny try to speak up very strongly sense and condeming those who want to follow foot-step instead, they should learn from the mistake he had made in the past but he kept silent which mean Dr. Riek Machar Teny have a lot of questions to answer to Southern Sudanese people.

Should Dr. Riek Machar Teny resigning.? Yes. I think Riek Machar and Kuol Manyang Juuk should be ask to submit their resignation base on the history background which they made a mess but the case for Kuol Manyang could be far more from the Dr. Riak Machar Teny. Kuol Juuk is not associate with any bad guys and his case seem to be winable than Dr. Teny’s case. 90% of Southern Sudanese believes strongly that, Dr. Riak Machar Teny he has brought more and more problems in GOSS and there is a doubtability to say, the majority of Southerners Sudanese don’t trust him. He seem to be softent on the bad guys even he was suggesting the SPLA should not supposed to fights with Athor Deng when in reality 200 and more people were killed by Athor rebel this can tell Southern Sudanese that, Dr. Riek Machar Teny is part of the problem and will not be trusted any more. If you disagree then, you need to ask many Southern Sudanese who have same observation and their feeling. How Dr. Riek Machar would change the minds of Southern Sudanese who are doubting him.? I think he has to answer this question.

It is hard to believe you are a South Sudanese when I observed your provocative writing. What do you think would happen if Dr. Riek is fan of Gen. Gatdet Yak?

Dr. Riek’s wise thinking has given us this to be Nation. You and I knows he was fighting for South Sudan while Garang was fignting for United New Sudan. What part you can’t understand? In the merge between Garang and Dr.Riek, the movement’s mission was traded off with SPLM name.

I failed to understand why people like you fail to mentioned the rebelous of Salva Kirr in late 2004 agaist Garang which nearly derailed the CPA process. Should it be why you look at General Gatdet Yak as a Nuer and instigating Nuer people to take action against Gehim while you get no gut to mention the fact that Gen. Athor is a aimless rebel leader from Dinka tribe who exposed the Dinka deals against Nuer and other South Sudanese tribes.

Yes, General Gatdet has make a mistake in attacking Mayom instead of Warrap where the plans against other South Sudan tribes are planned (but leave the civilians out of this for it is a Nuer calture not to kill powerless people). Gen. Gatdet is an expert in warfare than many generals that are on favirate list just becauase they are Dinkas or Dinka feet washers. Yes, it is time for vital ministerial pose holder Dinkas to go to front and meet thier fate.

Let me go back to pray that there should be a change in heart in General Gatdet Yak stop fighting but to get what? or changing his target if stoping war is not an option.

        Hi Mr Choldit,

Madina has said nothing but truth.Gatdet need to be vice president, chief of general staff and duty c-in-c.

comming to corruption: gatdet has cut some money in his division saying that he is going for treatment is that not corruption? i don,t know whether he thinks the sickness was brought by the soldiers or what.Gatdet is the most corrupt and greedy general among the generals of south sudan.

However it is very unfornate that the only good minister was the former minister of Finnace who brought all poor Nuers, poor equatorian and poor Dinka to smell richness by giving them contracts to become rich like those ministers who are corrupt and always enrich themselves alone. That minister should go back to distribute this money to all s.sudanese people like he did and everybody will be busy going to juba look for contracts nobody will thinking about rebellion.

The minister was making the s sudanese equal with equal chance no discrimination. He was fire not because he was corrupt but he was making everybody equal by making poor people rich like any other human beings.

I need that minister back to post.

Green Is Beautiful and Mama Justice.

Indeed, I want to thanks you back for your acknowledgement about my observation and yes, there is no one can run away from the truth.

In fact that, I am very excellent in trying to observing human attitudes and the things that, are surrounding us. Some politicians they thinks, there is no body observing them and they tried to confused citizens by having one foot on the rebel side and other foot in the GOSS and I think we have to tell these people that, you can not save two spoons at the same time. If someone in VP can not do a good things in that level then, he will never performs well in any position in the GOSS. Personal, I don’t see any reason why Dr. Riek Machar Teny in the second position of GOSS and he is still sticking with nonesense Ideas from the bad guys instead of showing strong leadership like Pagan Amum and many more others Southerners Sudanese. As a human being, we judge leaders for the good things they done and not because of PhD you hold it.

    Dear Readers,

What do Nuer people want in the South?

They are always the problem to the people of South Sudan right from all the rebellion. Riek Machar is the vice president of the GOSS with many ministers from Nuer and the chief of General staff of the SPLA as well as the deputy C-IN-C are from Nuer too, can u imagine this? how tribe do people of South Sudan have? if one tribe can have all these big people in the Government and still crying of marginalization, what will the other tribes say? is South belong to Nuer and Dinka alone, for them to be talking of marginalization? I think Nuer should sit down and think about this? or otherwise they will be just war mongers with no clear objectives.

      Dear Readers
People should not confuse that Nuer people are 65% percentage in South Sudan(SPLA)that is white liar because James Hoth Mai has said last year that Northern Bhar el Gazal (Aweil)alone has 40% percentage Armies in SPLA which can be approves if you need and I want to say we condem the killing civilian in Mayom county, which saw stupid and uneducated behaviour, SPLA will catch him like rates in bush let our independent come out, we will closed border and Sudan Army Force will closes border, we will see where peter Gadet will go.We Dinka, we respect Nuer community and every tribes in South Sudan but if you say, you want Dinka in South Sudan mean you are liar because Arab said before that we don’t want Dinka in Sudan, they want finish but they failed as every know.We dinka we never ever think that we need to finish any tribe in South Sudan due to our power because they been created,as everybody know in South Sudan whole, from uper Nile,Unity State,Bor, Abyei, Lake, Warrap, Western Bhar Ghazal and Great Northern Bhar Ghazal, these are places of Dinka, but Nuer is in great Upper Nile only. Please brother I need to tell you that we Dinka of Northern Bhar Ghazal we need Riak Machar to be contestant in 2015 in Presidential because we need everyone to be president in South Sudan even James wani, we love him to contest too, we don’t differentiate anyone/tribes that one is bad concept which don’t have Dinka at all be may some Dinka Bor but in Dinka Bhar Ghazal. Let God bless spirits of people who dead in Mayom. Mike M

    Garang’s disciples,

When starting or waging a war, it is not right that matters, but victory. Gen. Tiger Gatdet must not be dettered by words; rather, he must be engaged in resolution action. The ineviatble rekoning with Garang’s disciples is just began.

Gen. Tiger Gatdet Yak is not coward Athor nor any other coward Generals in Bilpam. He is a man of his words and he meant it when he said; "Mr. Slava’s Kingdom must be dislodged before it is too late."

      Childish Kim Deng

You Sound childish, Gatdet Yakke have no personal problem in GOSS as Athor does. There a lot of problem that does not need to be solves by War.

Athor was defending his life from being threaten that leads to unthinkable stages. It due directed life threatening ifwine or not against life. So he did not plan to rebel and he refuse to Governorship he was hunting to get killed while getting arrested.

Gatdet does have this situation happen to him to rebel; he can waited for change some time. Anyone Changing the leaders by bloody will be bloody leaders too. If anyone wanted to change leadership of SPLA/M without Dinka motive; it will be hard to get.

When some foolishly said Jaang Goss while somebody does not really in know SPLA/M before or does not know the exactly the form of GOSS. Gatdet will be dead if he attempts to use his Nuer militia style that attack Dinka Civilians alway.

The best thing has to do is to a good citizen to Citizen to all civilians. Even the innocence Dinka SPLA/M soldiers who are use badly to death; while there is a chance for them to get pay. The family are suffering behind them.

The good leaders’ do not cause a tribal clash that will put him into fire. Those general are the backbone of corruption as we alway crying. But you do not have to revolt while no one threatening your life. Like Gatdet he just wanted the wholes volume of Money for his wives.

You alway sound Jaang and they will kill you if go to the battlefield one against them. I knew you might be psychotic e Jaang-Naath that do not know who is your family. I do not see a different between Jaang and Naath as you alway differentiated them.

You are one of the men that can cause family rivalry/dispute among Wives, children. I guest just take that Deng last name for mistake. All these people are Gaat Deng: Jaang, Naath, Jiluo, latoure etc; all those who beliefs in “Deng” in Sudan are the same family.

      Tone of liberators

    Coward Dinka
Folks, I told you before that you can not expect things to run smoothly when GOSS is run by these coward Dinka. President Kiir is the good President but his advisers who are all from Dinka, affect his leadership.

SPLA must be change or this country gonna run red with blood one way or another and the coward Dinka will be the only one to suffer again like 1991.
