Ten medical laboratory students graduate in Rumbek

June 12, 2011 (RUMBEK) – Malteser International in Lakes State on Friday awarded certificates to ten students after two years of Medical Laboratory studies at its laboratory training school in Rumbek.

The graduation ceremony that was held at AFEX compound was attended by the governor of Lakes State Chol Tong Mayay, Dr. Margaret Itto Director General for Training and Professional Development Ministry of Health GOSS, Michael Lasuba the Lab Technologist GOSS and Malteser International Country Director Mr. Jan Kleinheisterkamp.

Addressing the graduates during the ceremony, Government of South Sudan Lab Technologist Michael Lasuba emphasized the importance of Medical Laboratory graduates in supporting disease diagnosis, surveillance and treatment. He attributed lack of trained Lab personnel, inadequate Lab institutions, lack of harmonization of Lab results in various States among others to poor health care.

He advised the graduates to maintain Laboratory quality controls and conduct. Mr. Lasuba also reminded the students to maintain Lab ethics and warned them that lack of this would lead to dissolution of their personnel license.

Dr. Margaret Itto, the Director General for Training and Professional Development highlighted the need for laboratory training. She lamented lthe ack of human resource for health care.

She said that South Sudan has the highest infant and maternal death rates in the world with statistics standing at 102 infants dying in every 1,000 live births and 2,054 mothers dying out of 100,000live births.

Jan Kleinheisterkamp the Malteser International country director congratulated the graduates and urged them to serve the citizens of South Sudan wherever they are needed whether in big cities or at the country side since South Sudan is a young nation that will rely heavily on its youth workforce.

South Sudan will become independent on July 9 following a referendum.

The governor of Lakes State Chol Tong Mayay thanked Malteser International for its tireless work among the citizens of Lakes State since 1998 and requested the organization to stay in South Sudan to oversee the nursing of the young nation.

Malteser International besides Medical Laboratory Training spearheads the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, and leprosy pandemics in Lakes State.

    Ten medical laboratory students graduate in Rumbek
    These students who managed to achieve this goal should now be taken to further studying instead of giving them certificates that will not function in the near future. Medical school is important for our citizens in the Southern Sudan so that nobody will be taken to other countries like USA for treatment. Also, the GOSS need to focus on providing technological advance buildings and equipments that could use by these graduate students.

    Who said it would not fouction…YOU see my dear Brother loboi we have to work with what we got for now…If things are not perfect it would encourage us to think deeper or use our brains…Foreign schools are so expensive.

    I appercieted adminstration and the Citizen of Lake State,for progressing on their plans to build people of Lake State for becoming together and support their activities. We external people of Lake State,we feel very happy for those activities and management for innternal differnces with in people themselves.Therefore,we indemand people objective that government of Lake State should put attention on civilan needs.
