Bentiu basketball team to represent South Sudan in US tournament

June 4, 2011 (JUBA) – Bentiu basketball team of Unity state will represent the soon-to-be independent Republic of South Sudan in the United States of America this year after emerging as the best team in South Sudan.

The Bentui team will be the first to represent South Sudan, as an independent state at an international sporting event.

South Sudan will formally become independent on July 9 following the overwhelming vote in favor of secession from the rest of Sudan in a January referendum. The Bentui team representing South Sudan will be among the other countries whose secondary school students will converge in the United States of America for sports competitions late this year.

To select the team to travel to the US the best teams from each of South Sudan’s ten states have engaged in inter-state competitions for the last two weeks.

The minister of Information in Unity State, Gideon Gatpan Thoar, on Saturday told Sudan Tribune that Bentiu’s basketball team emerged as the final winner after beating other nine other teams. Bentui beat the team of Aweil from Northern Bahr el Ghazal state in the final in Juba.

Thoar said the team also represented South Sudan last month in the East Africa Secondary School sports competitions in Nairobi, Kenya. The team lost in the semi-final, but was awarded a “cup for good conduct and professionalism” by the sports federation of East Africa.

Good job Unity Basketball team, it is good to hear something good from South Sudan instead of always bad news. We all wish good representation not only to Unity State but to our new nation as well. Do your best as you a young team of a new country.

Congratulation Bentiu for being the best basketball team in South Sudan even after that short competition period of only two weeks. I strongly disagree with the sporting team for sending members comprising of people from one state to represent South Sudan outside the country more so in a different continent. I thought they could they could select best players in all the five states that are inhabited by Nuer and Dinka to represent us in Basketball, let them take basketball because of their height, we Equatorians will take SOCCER, the world`s most loved game and we are good at it. Let them take Basketball, Volleyball and other games because they are tall.
If Bentiu Basket Team fails like the other time in Nairobi, it will be a shame to all of us, please mix them up with those tall guys from Jonglei, Upper Nile, Lake State, Warrap State, and the two Bahr el Ghazel states. MAUMAU

please you are nice guys according to your comments but always negative about our country activities. please judge according, but not one sided. if they won today maybe tomorrow will be another day for Upper Nile, jongei, and many others. sport is just black and white and i know that from own experience which i practice from many years.

    Dinka SPLA Dominant,

Please appreciate the national patriotism. Do not be too emotional brother. Even a dog can be appreciated when it barks against the enemy at night after it has eaten the meat left on fire for boiling.

It is great that we have a team that is going to represent us, however, the Republic of South Sudan should have identified the best players from each of the ten states and then made a national team not a state team to represent the country. I believe in so doing the country is able to utilize and nurture the talent that we have out there, and also foster unity among the people from each state.
Let us try to avoid situations which can be mistaken as tribalism. We are a young country that needs to stick together to achieve better outcomes in our endeavors.

Congratulation Bentiu team! I wish you good luck to do well on your tournment with USA.

  • 5 June 2011 23:24, by belle loboi

I knew it from day one that South Sudanese would be the best of best in athletic if we have people that train them well in any sport games. I think best players from each States could be best idea than one States but I think this is just high school competition. we will have a national team soon to play with a national team of USA, CHINA, JAPAN, and many other countries. Congratulation to Unity State players for this performance, keep it up with a good work.

Congratulation,Bentiu High School team to represent the new nation in USA.

Brothers, it is Bentiu high school team, not South Sudan team, otherwise U were right to from all ten state best players.

    dinka SPLA Dominen Boy.
what is currently happening in South sudan will come to an end after July 9 2011,corruption, nepoutisim, Tribalisim and so on which have cause all our leaders to be blame, or all of Us is coming to surprise end, and most people who did them will regret what they did and their children will not talk in the communties.

Kiir was bussy to achieve the independent and could not look back to see who have done what, but what all of us knows was that non of us was having money more than 100,000 USD but now people have billions so the case are very cleare, what did U have in 2005 and how did U use the budget of the your Ministery for the last 6 Years?

Killing in all arround South Sudan is because of no accountability and everybody wants to have money to show he was in the Bush whether inside or out side the struggle leaving the dead brothers suffering in their graves and their children on Earth which is shame on us.

But time will come when all this are going to be things of the past and shame on those who have done them even some will hung themselves or their children because of knowing they have taken public money or their Fathers.

Congratulations to Bentiu’s basketbal team. I am very proud of you to represent South Sudan in the face of the world before hand. I have no doubt that good things could come out of Bentiu because of leadership of Taban Deng Gai. Thank you Mr. Gai for your bravery and hardwork that you have shown to the world and South Sudan in particular.
      Bravo and God bless you

Great Job Bentiu Basketball Team Nuer Warriors Boys (BBTNWB)
Folks, It is very clear that Coward Dinka can not competing with Almighty Naath Nuer Warriors Kingdom. Folks, event, a basket game, soccer, volleyball and wrestling where Nuer Warriors Kingdom don’t use spears or guns, those useless Cowardic Dinka are still the looser.

Shame on you ya cowardic Dinka. The only Things you Dinka can defeat Nuer Warriors Kingdom on it is the only stealing of public funds that can be used for the development of the country.

I can assure you ya my cousins Dinka with that cultural mark that look like chicken legs on face, you will never never defeat Nuer Warriors Kingdom, unless you convert yourselves to be Nuer.

The Nuer Warriors Kingdom will lead you anywhere, anyplace in South Sudan.

Folks, I know that Dinka Team are taller and weak than Nuer Warriors Kingdom Team, but Nuer Warriors Kingdom Team are more strongest than Dinka, because one of the Dinka man can eat the foods that can be eaten by ten Nuer Warriors kingdom men. That one alone make Dinka Team weak mentally and physically.

Dinka can liberated you out of slavery son and you can not denied that. Howevery; I’am proud of this team not just boys for their achievement starting from their coachs to all the players and I wise them the best in that tournament. May God almighty bless them and May God bless the Republic of South Sudan as well.
