Upper Nile prepares to change to new South Sudan currency with 45 days

July 22, 2011 (MALAKAL) – The branch manager of the Bank of South Sudan in Malakal Pio Adiang Mayen said Friday that ten committees, located around Upper Nile state, will help citizens to replace the Sudanese Pounds with the South Sudanese Pounds. He said that a “serious” effort would be made to change the money within 10 days.

Pio_Adiang_Mayen_1_.jpgThe Republic of South Sudan, which declared independence from the Sudan two weeks ago following January’s referendum vote in favour of secession, adopted a new currency on Monday replacing the Sudanese pound.

Upper Nile state launched the new currency on Wednesday and is determined to replace the old currency within the time frame of 45 days.

“The days [for replacing the old currency] were reduced to 45 days but we hope to do everything within 40 days,” said Mayen.

Eight centres including five in Malakal town which are located at Ivory Bank, Agriculture Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, Makal county and Nile commercial bank offices, Mayen revealed.

Three mobile teams will spend time in each of the 10 counties in the state.

“We have few staffs. They will move from one county to another. I divided into three groups [for counties] because of responsibility and insecurity [threats] here in Upper Nile,” said Mayen.

The bank official added that he expects the local population “to receive the money very highly because it is their first time to be very free to have their own money [as a nation].”

    Dear Mr. Mayen;
    Three team to patrol ten counties isn’t enough to get the job done on time. I’d have advise you to make atleast five team for ten counties if your administration cann’t afford to finance each team for every county.

    Why people should be spending extra money mobilizing the team to counties. The government has been telling the public that we have introduced the new currency. So, I think this work is not the work of a government but the work of individual with money.
