November 10, 2011 (JUBA) — South Sudan’s president, Salva Kiir, has justified the action of his security services in the continuing detention of two journalists who have been in detention, one for eight and one for six days.

Kiir made the public address in the South Sudan capital, Juba, on Thursday.

Sudan Tribune journalist, Ngor Arol Garang, also editor of the The Destiny was arrested on 2 November. Dengdit Ayok, the paper’s deputy editor was arrested on Saturday 5 November, following an opinion article the paper carried, which was critical of Kiir’s daughter’s marriage to an Ethiopian.

In his first official statement on the matter, Kiir said “media freedom should not be abused to the extent of attacking personalities. In any case that will be defamation.”

Kiir said the journalists will, after investigations, be handed over to the police. He did not specify when.

Different sources said the two journalists have been held in a detention facility run by the security service in Juba since their arrest.

“It is not a crime for a lady to get married to the man of her choice. Forceful marriage, like experience has shown, can sometimes be very disastrous. Why are you now complaining yet none of you applied to marry my daughter?” asked Kiir, amid laughter.

Abraham Malek, senior editor with The Destiny’s Arabic language sister paper, said it published an apology to Kiir’s family for the article and suspended Ayok for a month.

Neither Barnaba Marial Benjamin, South Sudan’s information and broadcasting minister, nor his deputy Atem Yaak Atem, have been available for comment on the issue since the arrests.

Both local and international bodies have widely condemned the arrest and called upon the South Sudanese government to take immediate steps towards the release of the two journalists.

Human Rights Watch, Reporters Without Borders; Amnesty International; Committee to Protect Journalists; Association for Media Development in South Sudan; Community Empowerment for Progress Organization and South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy, have joined widespread condemnation of their arrest.

The president accepted the responsibility of jailing those two innocent Sudan tribune journalists. I think our leader needs help in understanding the constitution of south sudan. Those journalist must be release immediately otherwise the president will held accountable if something happen to them.

This is a clear evident from the president that these journalist were arrested through his order and shame to our acts that are always unscrutinized for international image. i personally realize that the profession of journalist is where the president does not belong and he order their arrest and a professional corruptist because he cannot order a single arrest of his fellow corrupt subordinate.

President Kiir is sometimes right. This time he is completely wrong. He should stop his mad dogs from biting people and spread the madness and death. When the security and the people are not in harmony, there will be no security but killings and murder of civilians in cold blod. Don’t justify your mistakes. Release those innocent journalists

I personally get disturbed when I see our president supporting the arest of the Journalists by security personnel.
This will let the security personnel think they can do any thing they want since they will get presidential support. This supprt alone accelerates insecurity. Let us forget the era of liberation,we are, government. What I expect is a presidential Pardon to the journalists.

Mr kiir.you should be politically and personally responsible for the life of two journalists ,arrested by your unprofessional security officers.it is very unfortune to arrest your unquestionable supporters for their sincerity in affairs of your family which can affect your dignity in public life.

    Mr. President,

We South Sudanese care less about who your daughter married to because she is just like her parents. A president with so many sex partners including some ministers in South Sudan government and also in some foreign countries. The daughters was 6 months pregnant when she married to Abasha. She was impregnated inside president house with the knowledge of the president.

Children need protection. Their mothers and fathers need protection too. It is really a heart-breaking experience to allow or even mobilze fellow South Sudanese to kill each other. I hold the president and his ministers personally responsible for the on-going genocide in the new country. Omoni Jr. What we need to do now is to preach peace among all tribes in South Sudan and seek protection of all

If Kiir daughter doesn’t want to be married by a black Southern Sudanese, then what color is her father? Is Salva Kiir a light skin, or a black? I think this girl is 100% prostitute if she doesn’t know her Identity. Shame on her and even her fathe

the Dinka boys are not to be blame for submitting their ”applications”to the President’s daughter coz the gals there are ever under tight security, 24/7, and the president’s daughters do not mix/socialize with common/mere people on the streets.but the ministers’s sons had a good chance but they didn’t do anything.may be it is a high time to ask, why people are not attracted to the pres’s famil

I am an Ethiopian and I am gutted by how many individuals made so much offensive remarks about Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Ask SPLM/A veterans about what Ethiopia did to support the liberation struggle. SPLA was almost decimated in the 80’s when Ethiopia came to its rescue. If the marriage is against your traditions, you have every right to go after your President but do not insult the Ethiopian guy

This corrupted and failed president is totally wrong no matter how he is trying to justifies his damn action against the innocent journalists. First, we all do condemn the marriage of her daughter for national security and ethical moral-value concerns. Secondly, if the president believes this case was a defamatory libel/slander, this case is supposed to be treated like a tort-case.

…continuation..This case should had been treated like a tort case and not criminal case. There is a difference between the tort and criminal law cases. Tort law are heard and trialed in the civil case, which is non-criminal case while criminal laws are administered in criminal court. So the president and her daughter deserve the rights to file a lawsuit against Ngor and Ayok in the civil court.

Thirdly, the president and her daughter do not understand the legality and legitimate procedures of this litigation. It is constitutionally wrong and outrageously condemnable for the president to insist that he has done the right thing to have arrested and jailed the journalists for what appears to be a civil case which should be heard and trialed through the tort law because this is noncriminal.

Officially, it is against the violation of sovereignty consitution and moral ethics for the presidential daughter and son to marry to a foreign aliens for the sake of national security reason and moral character of the royal family. By the way, the president himself has violated the constitutional rights of these journalists by arresting and jailing them for the civil case that involves tort-laws.

Kiir has treated this matter as a criminal case which is not the case at all. I do not blame Kiir because he is too illiterate to differentiate between the tort-laws and criminal law and whether this case fall under which laws and cases. In fact , this case is involving the tort law and therefore it deserves to be resolved through the civil court which involves noncriminal cases.

There is no need for presidential pardon or clemency at all, the president himself ought to be sued legally by the detained journalists because he has jailed them for a civil case which is non-criminal case. Instead, he should has filed a lawsuit against the journalists for defamatory libel/slander because this case is not a criminal issue, and therefore, it must not had involved arrest & detentio
