Two killed in raid on Jonglei’s Duk County

January 5, 2012 (BOR) — At least two people are reported to have died and two others are still missing in what some suspect is a new attack launched by Murle raiders in Duk County, on Thursday, January 5.

The attack took place a few days after the Murle’s territory in Pibor County was overran by Lou Nuer youth in a mass revenge attack in which over 3,000 were killed according to the commissioner. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan estimate that up to 50,000 people have been displaced.

The new commissioner of Duk County, Elijah Mochnom Wuor, told Sudan Tribune in Bor that his county, especially Duk Payuil, had lost many heads of cattle to Murle raiders who killed two people.

The raiders attacked and seized the cattle which were grazing in the fields at about 1pm local time on Thursday. The fighting between the raiders and the village youth continued till 7pm.

Wuor was unable to provide the number of the looted cattle but promised to release it later.

Most people in the county have no guns; many ran empty-handed after the raiders according to the commissioner.

The Commissioner called upon the government of South Sudan to avail protection to the people of Duk and quickly disarmam the rest of the state.

The youth leader of Duk County, John Tiop Lul condemned the attack and urged the government to intervene in the security situation there.
