February 09, 2012 (JUBA) - A fire broke out at the official residence of South Sudanese president, Salva Kiir on Thursday and burnt down a building he uses as an office.

The incident, which started at about 7:00pm local time was reportedly attributed to an electrical fault said to have emanated from an electrical pole next to the house. No casualties were involved.

Eye witnesses last evening told Sudan Tribune that huge flames were seen emerging from the President’s home, located on the outskirts of Juba, South Sudan’s capital.

“I was in my house but immediately rushed out on hearing the president’s house was burning. This was at about 7:30pm,” said an eye witness.

Security officials, sources said, completely sealed off the scene of the incident. Only staff from the fire brigade department were permitted entry into the residence.

Kenneth Thomas, the president’s press and media relations downplayed the fire outbreak, describing it as “minor incident.”

Cases of fire out breaks have, in the recent past, been a major occurrence in South Sudan. December last year, a fire at South Sudan’s Juba Being Hotel destroyed several properties and caused extensive damage.

In 2009, another fire at the same hotel destroyed nearly 60 rooms.

  • 10 February 2012 07:35, by Gabriel KK

There must be a source behind fire out break in this Country. Authorities conecrn must start invastigating and find out those behind these fires. otherwise Khartoum is using one of her cards here. watch carefully!

  • 10 February 2012 07:46, by BM Bol

Problems are opportunities in disguised. I hope ROSS leadership takes this incident and use it as an opportunity to develop the firefighters which are badly neglected.

  • 10 February 2012 07:51, by Padiet Deng Alony

Poor basic services to all citizens of South Sudan
God only will help people of my country!

    • 10 February 2012 08:28, by Abyei Soil

There are some cases we can at least point a single finger to a certain person or group but we shouldn’t held North Sudan responsible for every bad lack that might hinder development of our nation. The cause of fire is no evidence to accuse North Sudan @ Gabriel KK .

    • 10 February 2012 08:51, by Martin Kat

      Padiet,
No connection of the fire consumes and poor services because fire is a natural disaster even in UK fire was consumes many houes in last year.

this is just fire! even the white house where Obama lives can catch a fire. all these comment are not relevant to our nation building & unity. please guys let us grow and come out of these offensive and distructive thinking

    • 10 February 2012 13:02, by Force 1

Abdalla, remember, you did it in 2005, you know now what happened ever since, it did turned out well!

  • 10 February 2012 11:43, by Emmanuel Ajang Solomon

Thanks alot God is with us nothing bad has happen to president himself and his guards,

Dear, Mr, President you should know now that your people are not getting what they are suppose to get from their resources as Electricity, and is being overloaded to you and cause such damage when power is more then necessary and others don’t have too much of any thing is bad.

    • 10 February 2012 12:16, by Ruach

Emanuel. You are absolutely rite my brother. The resistivity of electricity is very low at his house because all flow of energy services are very accumulated in his house, which cause the problem now.

  • 10 February 2012 12:10, by AUGUSTINO DENG

I totally disagree with this news. The cause was not actually comes from electricity. Somebody was cooking tea in Salva Kiir Miyardit’s office, and that was the cause. Every office in Juba have waitresses who prepared tea and others beverage for the officers. The evidence of this cause was concealed, but I have to tell it to people.

By Augustino Deng. Jech la mer from Tharpam.

  • 10 February 2012 12:42, by Anyak

Dear brothers who all gave their comments for the incident,
What I would like to advise all of you is that don’t confiscate your selves and insult each other, it means that those who used to insult their President might know where they belong to but not South Sudanese, Government can not be divided like dowries it’s according to wish and your God to leave you and survive and become a leader.

  • 10 February 2012 13:35, by Waucity

Our President office burned down..Who build the building, never hire him or her in history of Southern Sudan...How can our president office have electric fault, This is not right.

  • 10 February 2012 14:19, by viper

This is a very good warning to mr Kiir. He has now to know that gathering a family and illiterates in that sensitive house is a sin and a shame to the RSS. Where is the fire brigate in this country? What is the work of those responsible with electricity in his house? Why not make a good control of electricity? Shame on those quack electricians

  • 10 February 2012 22:59, by Northern Sudanese
