Sudanese army take partial control of Heglig area – spokesperson

April 15, 2012 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) are at few kilometers from Heglig town and the area’s oilfields, Khaled Al-Sawarmi Khartoum’s military spokesperson said on Saturday evening 24 hours after beginning the the north’s bid to retake the border area from the South Sudanese army.

Sudanese army spokesperson Sawarmi Khaled Saad (Reuters)

South Sudan Vice President, Riek Machar, earlier on Saturday said the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Heglig repulsed an attack on Friday evening. Also, the military spokesperson, Philip Aguer, asserted that the two armies are fighting in Kersana, 41 kilometers north of the disputed area.

"We are now in Heglig area at few kilometers from Heglig town and oilfield," Al-Sawarmi said in a press conference held on Saturday evening. He further said the clashes are still taking place between the two parties.

Speaking on Sudanese TV later on Saturday he underscored that “we are not controlling the town and oilfields 100% as it was wrongly reported by some media because we are moving in accordance with military plans that should lead to win the battle with minimal losses".

In his press briefing, Sawarmi stated that Sudanese army aim to destroy the SPLA war machine before crushing its troops and Sudanese rebels operating in South Kordofan, which Khartoum claim are backed by Juba.

Military sources said SAF are facing fierce resistance from the SPLA on the ground. It pointed out that the mines planted by the South Sudanese troops around the oil fields have force the Sudanese troops to proceed slowly.

Sudanese minister of information Abdallah Ali Massar stated on Saturday evening that the SPLA and Darfur’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) mobilised over 10,000 soldiers to attack Heglig on 10 April.

While Sawarmi disclosed in a talk show on Sudanese TV that SAF had only one brigade when they were attacked.

Philip Aguer, SPLA spokesperson dismissed SAF’s claimed advance in the area, saying that Sudanese troops are still at least 30 kilometers from Heglig.

Aguer further said that Heglig as well as its surrounding areas were bombarded by Sudanese warplanes. Eye witnesses told Sudan Tribune that Mig 29 jet fighters dropped two bombs at noon targeting the main bridge in Bentiu town, the capital of Unity State.

Peter Gatkuoth medical director of Bentiu Hospital told Sudan Tribune that the bombing of Rubkotna Bridge killed at least five people and wounding five others.

Reports from the border areas in South Kordofan underline the growing tension and mobilisation from the two sides in Abyei and Defra, expressing fears of the extension of the fighting to other areas.

Misseriah tribal leader and opposition figure Abdel Rasoul al-Nur stated today that the Ethiopian peacekeepers deployed in Abyei prevented South Sudanese soldiers from entering the area.

Speaking about Abyei, Sawarmi warned that the SPLA "are not aware about where they are putting their feet".

    God bless RSS,

Pan-Thau renamed heglig by looters of our land and resources is not anywhere near close to be retaken by this ill-oriented so-called army of god. SAF are 40 killometers away, the same spot SPLA is waiting for them there. Long live SPLA, and our leaders in SPLM. Victory is certain for James Gatdhual and his fearless men in uniforms.

    • 15 April 2012 05:28, by zulu

Of course, as usual, SAF does not tell the truth. So far, the only reliable military source is the SPLA. The SAF and the NCP as the spin doctors do not accept reality. Once again, the SPLA is advancing now into Abyei and Karsana. Very soon, information will be released within 24hrs about these places. Defeat of the SAF is edging and the Spin doctors are already panicking.

SAF spokesman is lying to their people as usual. They will never come closer to Panthou ( heglig) by ground. He lied since Friday that their coward SAF were going to retake it in few hours. Now it is two days and they are losing the battle.

this is a blatant and deliberate lie from the SAF general to deny defeat and please his bosses in Khartoum so that his head does not get chopped off!. SAF have no morale at all and can not sustain heavy continuous confrontation with the SPLA. Kiir should just announce regime change in Khartoum by force. SPLA is marching to Khartoum soon ya jalab!!.

    • 15 April 2012 03:03, by omoni jr.

SAF are lying as usual ,but lies will not promote anything on the ground.

  • 15 April 2012 03:00, by Thyinka

This is a deliberate spin by Sudan Army spokesman to make it look that SAF have not been defeated. He stated previously that he would hear good news within hours but there is no good news yet for SAF. SPLA Oyee.

                  Northern Sudan

I guess you are still dreaming of the oil man, but unfortunately, south Sudan vehemently responded your aggressive aerial bombardment. Basically, this time northern Sudan will test the bitterness of war. Wait for few days, you will surrender only when you run shortage of food because you have no oil any more. Otherwise, your president Bashir will be handed to criminal court.

Of course, it was a trash and now you’v come up again with some more nonsense that you were in Panthou, but indeed you are no where, a surprise is coming to agitate you once more in 24hrs

        • 15 April 2012 08:14, by LL Reuben

          Mohommed Ali,

First of all, SPLA isn’t withdrawing from panthou (Heglig). Secondly, let’s be realistic, the SAF must defeat SPLA if NIF want to see them out of panthou. Thirdly, your regime has to start compensating for property and persons looted and killed in Abyei last year. They must withdraw from Abyei too or otherwise stop your ineptness, and stop singing the tune of AU and UN.

          • 15 April 2012 10:20, by mohammed ali

Ruch, we are very patient and very relaxed.Things will be clear very soon. Then I will see your response. There is no way that SPLA can sustain Heglig. SAF can march up to Jupa. Now they are destroying the SPLA war machine very professionally. The SPLA had fallen in the trap!!!We are not in a hurry!

These people have to seek refuge in Saudi because that’s where their father Mohamed is burred. You know that they go there to beg money through Islamic, yet, Saudi Arabian still call them black Africa because they are not pure Arab. What do you think if we shut down the oil field, most of them will go to Saudi instead of Egypt.

            • 15 April 2012 20:45, by mangou Lual

The population of Northern Sudan is not 43 million anymore because, South Sudan has already separated and Durfur are not going to fight since genocide is going in their territory. Blue Nile and Nuba Mountain are also against the central government. Where does the population of 43 million people comes from? Otherwise, they have to manufacture the fake people to fight south Sudanese army.

We have a duty to create an Islamic republic and to that end our first obligation is the creation of a system of propaganda. This has always been the way things work.Jihad means the conquest of all non-Muslim territories. During the Civil War over 5 million Southerners lived peacefully in the North and still over 700 thousand do right now. The number of Southerners killed by their own ppl is more than those killed by SAF which 1/3 of its manpower were Southerners. 5m southerners were staying in the north during sudan civil war,let not debate that estimation whether it’s true or lie coz that was part of their country then, however, south never start the war since 1940s why? Resistance is not offensive or whatsoever, people were defending their rights against forces of oppressiöns(saf).

        • 15 April 2012 19:53, by Dinka Aliap Chawul

You cant deny that sudanese govt hold prime responsbility in crisis which hit south sudan began in 1991 to 2002 and continue upto independence era due to sudan’s divides and rules policies, where its arm two rival communities with anticipation to reduce support these people gave to rebels.Ur govt kills more than 300000 in darfur, its not propogandum as u said but its documentation and evidence base.

  • 15 April 2012 09:35, by wang

Sawarmi Khaled Saad is a liar, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) wills never defeat or facing the Almighty SPLA on Earth. They can only use the air attacks as they are doing now and we are going to find the solutions to stop that from killing our civilians soon.

  • 15 April 2012 09:36, by Dmangau

i will keep what you said in mind :D ....... btw it is called Heglig and not Panthou.....the whole world knows that it belongs to sudan........good luck in facing and challenging your bosses in the west and the UN ........ yesterday, a british official said that it will be hard to bailout south sudan after the Heglig attack.......

      • 15 April 2012 10:17, by Alfredo christiani

Dear Northern Sudan, konan and the rest who are supporters of NCP
Let’s come to common sense, who first rejected international calls, for withdrawal of SAF forces in (Abyei)? Secondly who started aerial bombardment in South Sudan Territories? Thirdly who occupied areas of South Sudan along the border? Frankly speaking International laws will guide us, even if some world leaders want to sabotage

        • 15 April 2012 10:47, by Northern Sudanese

          Alfredo christiani

firstly of all, Abyei is our territory and not south sudans....thats why we took it.....

secondly, we will continue bombing till you stop supporting and arming the SRF......

Thirdly, we haven’t occupied areas.....all those areas belong to SUDAN

Finally, The international community knows all the facts.....the UN knows Heglig belongs to sudan and told SPLA to withdraw.........

          • 15 April 2012 20:34, by Dinka Aliap Chawul

Abyei,Jau and Panthou are not ur territories linguistically, tribally, geographically and by populations.displace persons has rights protected by internatiönal law to returns and re-own it,so if this say "power speaks louder than right" then continue and we shall just give u they share u want.

  • 15 April 2012 10:05, by wad balad

SPLM are now stuck and hidding around the oil facilities in higlieg because the SAF will not fire at them as to not damage the facilities. With excape n supply routes to the south now cutt-off SPLM are tryin to settle via negotiations. But its too late, SAF are already preparing graveyards for them outside . We are in no rush and SAF will wait for the rats to come out from the holes.

lol, you exlain the situation in a very humorous way bro :D

  • 15 April 2012 10:33, by Alfredo christiani

    Wad balad and Northern Sudan
Shut your dirty mouths, if you were men why your fathers made conscriptions on a poor streets boys in Khartoum to come and fight for you , those who called themselves sons of the soil ( AWALABALAD ) ,should come physically to face the consequences’ of war ,SPLA will defeat all poor streets boys of NCP within 24 hours , Facks Arabs, turn your anus to (Junubian)

    • 15 April 2012 10:42, by Northern Sudanese

      Alfredo christiani

you mean SPLA which is about to die in Heglig? or you mean the SPLA who is in Juba and is about to send youth to take over khartoum? lol hahahahaa

  • 15 April 2012 11:18, by Tamongali

Iam peace and humantarian lover. I ask the almight god to use his power to turn all the bombs and bullets exhange between the two warring sides into rain and drops of water on each side.I also ask god to remove the devils of war that is staying in heart of both NCP and SPLA/M supporters. Amen

    • 15 April 2012 12:25, by LL Reuben

Sorry brother, but your world doesn’t exist. We love peace but the only problem is peace doesn’t come by itself. If you’re a South Sudanese then say Amen to that be cause history is still fresh in your mind like the rest of us. We have to create peace but unfortunately sometimes bullet is the main ingredient to achieving peace. Otherwise, my humble apology for disturbing you. Amen!

Africa does not want sharia, europe does not want sharia, israel does not want sharia, keep it for your dictatorial regimes ! No one wants to be part of your stinking death cult.

      • 15 April 2012 15:19, by Northern Sudanese

did someone say that we want you south sudanese to have sharia? lol, weird guy......

btw to all south sudanese, lol shutting down oil production to hit the north hahahahaaha prices rising in khartoum? look where the prices are DOUBLING instead of just rising http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8V_ve8nTSE&list=HL1334495923&feature=mh_lolz

        • 15 April 2012 15:23, by Northern Sudanese

lol, its like wanting to hit someone but instead you hit yourself hahahahhaha

its even worse that after we take Hegig, our relations will become completely negative...
you have already 4 milion hungry people while there is still a storm of 700-500 thousand people underway from sudan...

yesterday we were shown a documentary of salva trying to hit sudan but instead he is destabilizing his own land

  • 15 April 2012 15:28, by Northern Sudanese

you south sudanese must understand the fact that sudan is actually improving.....sudan will become the 10th largest gold producer in the world and the 3rd in Africa......sudan will rapidly increase its agriculture and will become hopefully the largest sugar exporter in Africa.......our gold is likely to hit 50 ton this year while we already hit 11.5 ton on the first 3 months of this year......

  • 15 April 2012 15:31, by Northern Sudanese

you (southerners) must not forget the fact that your oil will halve in about 5-10 years...... in the year 2016,sudan will be exporting more oil and increase the production to 320,000 b/d ......and dont forget, the time sudan oil production increases is the time when oil crisis in this world begin so prices will get higher and sudans budget will get higher than even before separation.......

    • 15 April 2012 15:33, by Northern Sudanese

correction :- (your oil will run out in the year 2020)

  • 15 April 2012 15:36, by Northern Sudanese

In addition to all this, dont expect your government to take over Heglig because the world knows that Heglig is part of sudan and thats why the UN,US,EU,African Union and Arab leage supported sudan and wanted SPLA to withdraw.....

  • 15 April 2012 15:46, by Northern Sudanese

what i am trying to say, dont care about our business......dont care about whats happening in sudan, sudan is not your country.....dont expect NCP to fall, you dont have the right to overthrow Bashir.......

  • 15 April 2012 15:49, by Northern Sudanese

what i am telling you southerners.......look to your country today......this is the country you fought for......this is the country and freedom you always wanted....but look at it now, is this the type of country you wanted? you lost 98% of your budget by shutting down oil because you thought it would ignite crisis in sudan, but who did it really hit?

  • 15 April 2012 15:52, by Northern Sudanese

you southerners also always speak about Darfur,Blue Nile and South Kordofan.......but the fact is, your country is far more worse than those mentioned places......how many people died in south sudan for cattle? you south sudanese have 4.5 milion people in need of food aid this year.....you have tribal conflict everywhere......you have no roads,no schools,no hospitals,no medicines, only 500 doctors

    • 15 April 2012 16:05, by Lasu lo Denis

      To Jalaby,
Are you not ashamed to talk to your hero when Heglig is just in hands of SPLA. shame on you. Go and mourn to gether with your defeated commanders like Swarmi. we are capturing the next town followed by Abye then we will move to Khartoum.

      • 15 April 2012 16:11, by Northern Sudanese

        Lasu lo Denis

i think your missing out the recent news so i may just ignore you.......

      • 15 April 2012 16:18, by Northern Sudanese

        Lasu lo Denis

but i may answer your question, why would i be ashamed? when SPLA took over Heglig, they entered by 3,000 fighters while there were less than 200 SAF troops in Heglig on that time......

yesterday there was an interview with sawarmie of how heglig fell to spla on the first and how our forces retreated.....we were explained everything and believed it was the right thing to do

  • 15 April 2012 15:59, by Northern Sudanese

no teachers,no buildings,no money,no food, no no no no no no no............

  • 15 April 2012 16:02, by Northern Sudanese

so care about your own business, forget about sudan........before separation, you voted for independence and expected sudan to fall and the south improving because you had the oil........but what is happening today? what is happening today is that sudan is improving and south sudan falling.....its exactly the opposite of what you expected before independence

  • 15 April 2012 16:10, by Northern Sudanese

when you call the NCP a coward, remember how NCP is managing sudan inorder not to fall.....after seperation, sudan immediately started working and made plans for the future.....sudan looked for alternatives and it succeeded......NCP working very hard to improve sudan.....the only main problems facing sudan today, are the problems in South Kordofan and south sudan because its a heaven for rebels....

  • 15 April 2012 18:01, by Kim Deng

    Sunday, 15 April 2012 08:20 South Sudan >>>

"The SPLA has captured 14 soldiers from the Sudan Armed Forces and brought them to Juba. They were caught near Heglig, in the disputed border area between South Sudan and Sudan, which has seen heavy fighting in the area over the past few weeks, between the two countries."

  • 15 April 2012 18:16, by Kim Deng

SAF have been pushed northwards and Jalaba Mujahideen have not even come close to Heglig according to information from the front lines. They have been repulsed and have been making rumours to media to mislead public.
