South Sudan’s Kiir writes protest letter to Ethiopian PM

June 17, 2014 (JUBA) – South Sudanese president Salva Kiir has written to the East African regional bloc (IGAD) demanding an apology over remarks allegedly made by one of its officials.

The letter, foreign affairs minister Benjamin Marial said, was delivered by a government minister to Ethiopia’s prime minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, who is the current IGAD chairperson.

IGAD’s executive secretary Mahboub Maalim allegedly described president Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar as “stupid” for pursuing military means instead of peace talks the ongoing conflict.

Marial said statements attributed to Mahboub was “unfortunate", given the regional body’s mediation role.

“The government, specially our president, has sent an envoy to with a letter to prime minister of Ethipia with regards to the unfortunate statement which was said by executive secretary of the IGAD in the press,” Marial told reporters in Juba Tuesday.

He declined to further reveal the content of the letter or what the government expected in response.

The presidential spokesperson, Ateny Wek Ateny, however, said that the government needed an apology.

“It is clear that [IGAD Executive Secretary] Mahboub has insulted the Head of State and what we wan is an apology,” Ateny told Sudan Tribune Tuesday.

The peace talks between government and opposition led by Machar has been postponed as government delegation demanded response from IGAD.

South Sudan’s information minister, Michael Makuei told the SSTV on Monday the IGAD official’s comment was “inappropriate” and put to question the mediators’ abilities to over see the talks.

Meanwhile, cabinet affairs minister, Elias Lomoro said Mahboub visited Juba on Monday, but was denied access to meet president Kiir over comment he allegedly uttered.

An apology is not enough! Ethiopia must acknowledge Salva Kiir as the military and political GENIUS who

      1. Staged a fake coup without any evidence

      2. Had thousands of Juba citizens murdered

      3. Started a civil war that displaced 10% of the entire population! untold killings and violations.

Kiir will soon form a government with Riek as his VP.

How can that be called stupid?

    • 18 June 2014 10:46, by Akook

stupidity at best! Dr Marial and Ateny concern about stupidity labelling .. how about 10,000 lives lost in Kiir and Machar stupid actions? Are these lives nothing to be concerned about than a correct statement directed at the real culprits!

Mahjoub Maalim needs a thank you letter from Kiir labeling him as stupid. The word stupid shouldn’t hurt Kiir because he is not smart anyways.

You are honestly approved to be the most stupid human being than that alcoholic Mrs. kiir M7. Yours making up coup is lost case which was discard in the second day of the incident last year in Juba by the world experts….furthermore, have a close looks at the way the IGAD plus wider international community are treating Dr. Riek like a President and Mrs. Kiir M7 as a rebels….

  • 18 June 2014 14:42, by Jalaby

Well, I believe Mr. Kiir has gone back to his old lovely habit of writing letters, before he wrote 75 letters to 75 thieves in the south, he also wrote a letter to Obama apologizing to him of being a liar about supporting SPLA-N, he wrote 10Th letters to Bashir and none of it made any sense!

    • 18 June 2014 14:47, by Jalaby

Now he is writing a protest letter to Ethiopian PM!
Be honest I won’t be surprised if tomorrow Mr. Kiir writes a letter to Riek Machar and apologizes to him and asks him to come back to his old position and ends the war as if nothing has happened at all!
      Mr. Kiir is amazing person!

  • 18 June 2014 17:12, by Joseph Canada

The IGAD General Secretary was right. Kiir is stupid, and it was a very stupid Idea to start killing the tribe just because of your personal failure to lead the Peaceful Govt. The Dinka Greed, Nepotism, and total luck of Human thinking. It’s stupidity and so he’s stupid indeed.

  • 19 June 2014 00:21, by Knight In Shining Armor

99% of people who commented here said the same thing that Mr Kiir is stupid so, what else? IGAD executive secretary was right. No apology is needed.
