Khartoum says it is hosting 328,000 refugees from South Sudan

August 14, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government is saying that the number of refugees who have fled from the conflict in South Sudan has reached 328,000.

These figures far exceed those announced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) this month which puts them at 198,657 as of July 22.

The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Ahmed Adam said that all international indicators point to the stability of the humanitarian situation in the country.

He told state radio on Friday that there were no epidemic outbreaks and no famine or food gap adding that they have reached 95.5% of the needy population.

Adam denied reports on the entry of cholera from South Sudan and said that Sudan tabled options for voluntary repatriation as well as resettlement.

The commissioner said that the 328,000 are distributed among 13 states in Sudan with the majority in White Nile and Khartoum states with a combined total of 190,000 refugees.

He spoke of a recent large influx of southerners in the state of West Kordofan noting that their teams began to conduct the necessary surveys to determine their numbers and services that can be provided.

The official said that Sudan’s hosting of refugees from South Sudan was the subject of a tribute by the international community and Juba. He called for more support so that the government can provide the basic services for the refugees.

The bloody conflict that erupted in South Sudan between government troops and rebels led by former Vice President Riek Machar since mid-December 2013 resulted in thousands of civilians fleeing to neighboring countries and particularly Sudan.
