Last July, Sudan said that Russian companies would be given priority in gold and radioactive uranium extraction contracts in the country.

In early August, a Russian company by the name of Sibanye signed an agreement with the Sudanese ministry of minerals to extract gold in the Red Sea and the River Nile states which was described as the largest investment contract in Sudan’s history in the field of minerals.

Al-Karouri , who met with the Russian ambassador to Khartoum Mirgayas Shirinskiy, described the anticipated visit of the vice president to Moscow as “important” particularly as it represents the first visit by a high-level Sudanese official to Russia, hoping it will be a good start for the joint ties between the two nations.

The Russian ambassador briefed the Sudanese minister during the meeting on the ongoing arrangements for the vice president’s visit, saying the latter will deliver a written letter from president Omer al-Bashir to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

Al-Karouri added that the delegation would be comprised of six federal ministers who will review the joint files with their Russian counterparts, pointing they would engage in the meetings of the technical committees to discuss all issues pertaining to the joint cooperation as soon as they arrive in Moscow.

The Russian ambassador for his part stressed that officials in Moscow are attaching great importance to the visit which would push forward the bilateral relations, vowing to make every effort to ensure the success of the visit.
