Juba City Council adopt master plan to improve security

April 3, 2016 (JUBA) – Members of Juba city Legislative Council have adopted 15 resolutions to act as a master plan to improve security and basic service delivery.

juba_maps.pngThe councillors, on Friday, endorsed the mayor’s development plans for fiscal year 2015/2016. Also incorporated in the plan were recommendations discussed.

The speaker of the council, Michael Allah-Jabu said the newly adopted plan will help enhance Juba’s security. The policy framework is expected to be endorsed this week.

The latest move by Juba authorities to improve security come in the wake of the arrival into the South Sudan capital of more than 370 South Sudan’s armed opposition (SPLM-IO) officers to take part in the joint security arrangements for Juba city.

This is an encouraging step in facilitating the return of first vice president-designate, Riek Machar and the formation of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU) in accordance with the Agreement for the Resolution of the conflict in South Sudan.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said it has extended logistical support for the clearance of an illegal trading zone nearby the pedestrian gate of Juba Protection of Civilians site 3.

The decision follows an earlier request from South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police Service for the UN mission to grant the tearing down of the trading zone in response to concerns raised by community leaders in the protection site.

The illegal trading zone was considered a security threat to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the protection sites.

According to UNMISS, the government-led operation to demolish shops was carried out by the state governor and officers from the police and South Sudan army (SPLA).
