Rebels attacking towns in Sudan’s Darfur, Kordofan regions: press

KHARTOUM, Oct 2 (AFP) — Darfur rebels have launched attacks on towns in North Darfur and in West Kordofan, central Sudan, the Khartoum press reported Saturday, quoting witnesses.

Rebels_of_SPLA_during_training.jpgIndependent daily Akhbar Al-Youm said armed men of the Tora Bora rebel faction Friday attacked Majrour town in Ghibaish district, West Kordofan, targeting the town’s police centre and a commercial communications centre.

It quoted witnesses as saying the rebels declared they now controlled Majrour.

The rebels also threatened to attack Ghibaish town for the second time, Akhbar Al-Youm said.

Another group of rebels attacked a police force Friday that was posted in Ndjamena village in North Darfur to protect displaced persons, the Sudanese Media Center said.

SMC said yet another group attacked a relief convoy led by Al-Feshir Commissioner Abdullah al-Zubair heading to the Tawelah camp for displaced persons. Escorts said the attackers had come from the camp.

The rebels wounded an unspecified number of civilians and looted the convoy, which was carrying building materials, school equipment and medical supplies.

SMC said security forces have uncovered a cache of weapons buried near the Zamzam camp in North Darfur.
