One student killed in clashes at University of Kordofan

April 19, 2016 (KHARTOUM) - One student was killed and more than twenty others injured on Tuesday in violent clashes among students at the University of Kordofan, 588 km south west of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

Students throw stones during a confrontation with the antiriot policemen in the University Street as they protest over government plan to transfer the premises of the University of Khartoum outside the capital, on Wednesday April 13, 2016.

The bloody clashes erupted between the students belonging to opposition parties and those supporting the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) during an election campaign to win over the Students’ Union.

Medical sources in North Kordofan state capital, El-Obeid said that first year engineering student Abu Bakr Siddiq died of gunshot wounds, pointing that five other students were injured by live bullets.

The same sources added that 22 students have been injured in the clashes, pointing that some of them sustained serious head and pelvis wounds and require advanced medical care that is not available in the city.

According to a statement issued by the students belonging to the opposition Tuesday, the NCP supporters who controlled the previous Students’ Union held the general assembly on Monday in prelude to holding the elections.

It added that the general assembly demanded the students to submit the lists of candidates at 5:00 am (local time) in an attempt to dissuade them from participating in the elections and allow the NCP supporters to win by acclamation.

The statement added that while the opposition supporters were heading to submit the list of their candidates on Tuesday dawn, they were attacked by plain clothes officers.

It pointed that one student was killed in the attack and several others wounded, saying dozens of the students have been detained. Also, a vehicle and two motorcycles of the university guards were burnt.

The statement held the university chancellor and the elections committee besides the university guards responsible for the bloody events and accused them of complicity in the attack against the defenceless students.
