African Union delegation arrives in Darfur

AFRICAN UNION – AFRICAN MISSION IN SUDAN

An African Union Commission delegation led by the Commissioner for Peace and Security, Amb. Said Djinnit, will arrive in El Fasher on Thursday, 2 June 2005, for a two-day working visit to Darfur, Sudan to asses the humanitarian situation. The visit was initially to be conducted by the Chairperson, but unforeseen developments made him not to proceed with it. Commissioner Djinnit will be accompanied by the Commissioner for Political Affairs, and representatives of some AU Member States.

On that occasion, the Commissioner will convene a meeting with the Humanitarian and NGO community on 4 June 2005, in the premises of the headquarters of the African Union Mission (AMIS) in El Fasher, to discuss the humanitarian situation in Darfur and how best AMIS could continue to provide and enhance protection to humanitarian convoys and personnel.

This visit to Darfur follows the AU Assessment Mission in Darfur, from 10 to 22 March 2005, and the decision of the 28th meeting of the PSC, held on 28 April, 2005 which decided that AMIS strength should be increased to a total of 6,171 military personnel with an appropriate civilian component including up to 1,560 civilian police personnel by the end of September 2005

The delegation will conclude their visit with a stop over in Khartoum for further consultations with the Sudanese authorities and members of the International Community, specifically, the representatives of AU member states and AU Partners resident in Khartoum.
