Arab League chief holds talks with Sudanese leaders on peace and reconstruction
October 26, 2026 (KHARTOUM) – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy held talks on Monday with the heads of Sudan’s Sovereign Council and cabinet to discuss peace and reconstruction.
The Arab League is working with the Quintet Mechanism, which includes the United Nations, African Union, IGAD, and the European Union.
The mechanism aims to settle differences among Sudanese political forces in preparation for a political process.
The Sovereign Council said in a statement that its chairman and army commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met with Fahmy at the presidential palace.
Fahmy said in a press statement that he is visiting Khartoum as part of the Arab League’s commitment to protecting Sudan’s interests.
He added that this includes achieving peace and stability and supporting reconstruction efforts.
Fahmy said the visit reflects the Arab world’s focus on the Sudanese crisis and the need to address it.
He noted that the country holds special importance within the Arab world.
Fahmy renewed the Arab League’s commitment to supporting Sudan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions.
He said he will continue meeting with officials and the dialogue preparation committee to hear their views on establishing peace.
After meeting Fahmy, Prime Minister Kamil Idris said the Sudanese government is open to peace efforts that preserve the country’s sovereignty and institutions.
Idris called on the Arab League to increase its efforts in the coming period, both bilaterally and within the Quintet Mechanism.
The Arab League is the most prominent regional bloc supporting Sudan in the conflict that began in April 2023.
Fahmy announced the Arab League’s backing for efforts to prepare a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue during a visit to the committee’s headquarters.
He stressed that the dialogue must be purely Sudanese and held in Khartoum or elsewhere within the country.
This approach ensures Sudanese people participate in rebuilding their state and achieving political and societal stability, he said.
The dialogue’s success requires agreed-upon preliminary arrangements that consider the concerns of citizens and political forces, Fahmy added.
He called for a detailed action plan to enable gradual progress and build trust in the process.
Fahmy also urged the inclusion of diverse opinions, provided they respect the Sudanese state and its institutions.
The dialogue preparation committee, an independent body with government support, is holding preliminary consultations with political and civil forces.
Committee spokesman Osman Mirghani said they look forward to an active role for the Arab League in supporting the Sudanese dialogue.
Mirghani noted that the meeting with Fahmy covered the Sudanese crisis and the Arab League’s efforts to address it.
He added that the discussion focused largely on the dialogue’s trajectory and ways to create the conditions needed for its success.
The meeting also explored potential support for the committee and practical proposals to expand cooperation in the upcoming phase.
