Joint Communiqué between the Umma National Party and South Sudan External Front
Press Statement
The Umma National Party and the South Sudan External Front (SSEF), which is an umbrella organization of South Sudan Liberation Movement, South Sudan Referendum Forum, South Sudan Democratic Forum, and the South Sudan Civic Societies, after intensive consistent political dialogue for a period of one year in which contemporary issues of national concern have been the focus of contact and discourse; the two parties welcome the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), between the Government of Sudan (GOS) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/ Army (SPLA/M), signed on January 9th, 2005, which has stopped the war and reaffirmed the Right of Self-determination for the People of Southern Sudan. Despite inadequacies of the CPA, the two parties shall work to correct these shortcomings so that it is more inclusive, fair, and representative of the Sudanese Nation’s outlook.
The two parties have agreed here-forth:
To coordinate strategically and align policies for advancement of national unity, democracy, freedom, and issues of mutual interest;
To work collectively for a Broad-spectrum National Conference to resolve all outstanding problems;
To bolster the principles of democracy, freedom, and the respect of Human Rights;
To insist on a setting of an election date that must be held at the end of the first half of the interim period;
To harmonize and facilitate peaceful co-existence among the border-tribes;
To promote the spirit of voluntary unity among our people at home in diasporas and;
We strongly believe that the Questions of Dafur and Eastern Sudan should be resolve within the framework of the Broad- spectrum National Conference.
Even with the remarkable achievement that the CPA have brought about in stopping the war and the gains to the People of Southern Sudan, the two parties (The GOS and the SPLM/A), do not represent the political composition of both north and south. Therefore, we are assuring our people that we shall communally struggle peacefully until these principles are achieved in and outside our country.
Long lives the struggle of the Sudanese People
