Sudan’s Kiir urges EU to press Darfur rebels on peace

Oct 8, 2005 (KHARTOU) — Sudanese First-Vice President Salva Kiir Mayardit urged the European Union on Saturday to press rebels in its western Darfur region to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict there.

Also, Kiir called on the EU not to confine its support to Sudan with the solution of Darfur crisis, and to adhere to the commitments which were declared recently at the Donors’ Conference in Oslo.

He stressed the government keenness to implement in full the peace agreement, adding that the government of south Sudan will be formed in the coming days.

The EU official promised to extend EU’s support to Sudan. “We recognized, during our meeting, the Sudanese government’s seriousness to implement the country’s comprehensive peace agreement,” said Solana, adding that the government should exert more efforts to realize peace in Darfur.

Solana further added that they felt during their meeting with Salva Kiir the seriousness of Sudan government to reach solution for these problems.
