Canada ready to increase development aid to Ethiopia – envoy

Oct 12, 2005 (ADDIS ABABA) — Canadian Ambassador to Ethiopia expressed his government’s readiness to strengthen assistance to development works being carried out in Ethiopian and other African countries.

regarding Prime Minister Meles’ talks with members of Foreign Affairs Standing Committee of the Canadian Senate, Ambassador Yves Boulanger said the government of Canada is studying ways of further strengthening its development cooperation with Ethiopia and other African nations.

Boulanger indicated his government’s desire to further expand its assistance for the ongoing development activities in Ethiopia and also expressed his readiness to play his role to further strengthen development cooperation between the two countries.

According to Ambassador Boulanger, members of Canadian Senate and Meles have held fruitful discussions on ways of boosting development cooperation between Canada and African nations.

He indicated that members of Canadian Senate will present their report for Canadian Parliament after studying ways of enhancing development cooperation, executing African Development Programs as well as ensuring democracy and resolving problems attached with security affairs.

As Meles was among Commissioners of the African Commission established by British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Boulanger said he has discussed with members of the Canadian Senate on the assistance needed from Canada for the realization of recommendations of the Commission.

Prime Mimister Meles has also indicated that the assistance being provided by Canada for Ethiopia and other African countries should be expanded both qualitatively and quantitatively, according to a senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
