Ethiopia’s House approves appointment of parliamentary office Head

Oct 27, 2005 (ADDIS ABABA) — Ethiopia’s House of Peoples Representatives has endorsed the appointment of the parliamentary office head, executives and members of 12 standing committees.

The House also said 31 member of the opposition CUD reported to it of whom 22 had sworn-in and joined the parliament.

In its session held here on Thursday, the House approved the appointment of Adanech Abebe as Head of the Office.

Briefing members of the parliament, House Speaker Teshome Toga said he has nominated Adanech as candidate for her leadership competence and long years of experience as well as by taking consideration gender status.

The Parliament endorsed the appointment with 382 votes and one objection. The appointment of the Adanech, who has a first degree in law, has also got the support of opposition parties.

Adanech, who is representing OPDO/EPRDF, was sworn-in before the parliament.

The parliament had also approved the appointment of executives and members of 12 standing committees and a proposal providing for the amendment of the organization of of the committees and the principle the speaker and deputy speaker as well as party representatives need to follow after an in-depth discussion.

Speaking on the occasion Teshome said a 10-consultation meeting was held with political parties on the democratization and justifiability of the organization of the standing committees.

The setting up of the standing committees is vital for the activities of the House, he said.

The organization of the Committee will be made depending the number of seats each party has in the federal parliament, Tehsome said.

The House approved the appointment and the proposal with 323 votes, three objections and 55 abstentions.

The House said so far 31 CUD members have reported to it of whom 22 have already sworn-in and began their activities.

So far 459 of the 547 members of the federal parliament have sworn-in and began their activities.
