Sudan to host India exhibition

June 2, 2006 (NEW DELHI) — Industry chamber Assocham will be taking part in the first ever India specific exhibition starting August 22 in Sudan to fuel bilateral trade between the two countries.

The five-day exhibition will be inaugurated by the President of Sudan. Several Ministers in the Government of Sudan and its industry representatives will visit the exhibition and meet the exhibitors to discuss avenues of cooperation and opportunities for investment.

ASSOCHAM has been allotted prime space in the Khartoum International Trade Fair Grounds with the capacity of more than 1,400 square metres as display area, the Indian PTI reported

The bilateral trade between India and Sudan has grown by 51 per cent to US $225 million in 2004 over the previous year and it continues to expand in various fields.

“There is a need to strengthen the cooperation in more areas. A good number of automobiles, drugs and pharmaceuticals, machinery and instruments continue to flow from India to Sudan on a regular basis,” the chamber said.

Other important items of export from India to Sudan are tea, coffee, spices, rice, wheat, plastic, linoleum products and manmade yarn.

Discovery of oil and its export since August 1999 has rightly given rise to the Sudanese aspirations to upgrade the country’s infrastructure.

Sudan also offers a flourishing market for vehicles, motor cycles, bicycles, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics, agricultural implements and machineries of all kinds besides processed foods, rice, lentils, tea and textiles.
