BBC Monitoring Middle East

By Akhbar al-Yawm daily newspaper

KHARTOUM, Nov. 13, 2003 — Akhbar al-Yawm has received accurate information from reliable sources on the background to the closure of the US embassy in Khartoum because of threats of terrorist attacks.

Our information suggests the CIA relied on a telephone conversation between two people in which one of them said something would happen to Americans in Sudan.

It is worth recalling that the decision to close the US embassy in Saudi Arabia for fear of terrorist attacks also relied on a similar telephone conversation and it is well known that with regard to this type of information, the CIA relies on telephone intercepts in most parts of the world.
