Darfur rebel JEM calls upon Sudanese president to release Slovene envoy
Sudan Justice and Equality Movement (JEM)
JEM Appeals for Release of Slovenian Envoy, Kriznar
August 17, 2006 — JEM appeals to President Albashir to pardon Mr Krizner and end his imprisonment in Sudan. It is true that Mr. Kriznar has, regretfully, breached Sudan’s consular rules. He has however worked tirelessly to bring peace to Darfur and help heal the rift between us and the government of Sudan.
In addition to his work as a peace activist, Mr. Kriznar also acts as envoy for Dr. Drnovsek, the current President of the Republic of Slovenia. Dr. Drnovsek’s work for Sudan is well known. Twice he attempted to mediate in Darfur crisis. In both initiatives, the mediation was inclusive with the invitation extended to all major stakeholders, including members of Albashir’s government. Dr. Drnovsek’s last initiative was attended by members of JEM and Mr. Dreij of the Federal Democratic Alliance but only because others declined the invitation due to last minute change of mind, and not without some pressure from certain circles, particularly the US government.
Through leadership and philanthropic spirit of Dr. Drnovsek, the Slovenian people have collected several millions (Euro) for Darfur. Mr. Krizzar’s mission to Darfur was to assess delivery of Slovenian assistance to Darfur people.
As members of JEM and despite our enmity with the Government of Sudan, we appeal to President Albashir to send Mr. Kriznar safely back to his country. He is not party to our problem and the efforts of the Slovenian President and the Slovenian people will remain very much appreciated by all Sudanese people.
