Ethiopia’s UEDF determined to continue peaceful political struggle

Oct 12, 2006 (ADDIS ABABA) — United Ethiopian Democratic Forces (UEDF) issued here on Wednesday 11 October a 10-point statement.

Beyene_Petros.jpgUEDF Executives, Prof Beyene Petros, Dr Merera Gudina and Dr Gebru Gebremariam said UEDF wants to renew its resolve to continue with its peaceful political struggle, which “we” are convinced is the only correct route to viable democratic order.

They called up on EPRDF [ruling coalition, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front] to desist from its unprincipled scheme of undermining the wellbeing and integrity of opposition political parties by causing discord with their ranks.

They said with the intention of normalizing the highly charged post-election fervour, the UEDF had entered into dialogue with the EPRDF and completed the discussion on two out of six agreed agenda items and had signed a joint agreement.

They said UEDF would like to take this occasion to expose the shameful acts of the few individuals who are at the service of the ruling party and the few others who are trying to serve us [as] conduits to the unrealistic agendas of the Diaspora political movement.

They called up on the whole population in general and its membership in particular to re-double their peaceful struggle.

The House of Federation and all relevant police take prompt actions as provided in the constitution to settle border demarcation dispute between some regions and curb the human suffering perpetrated by government action that attempt to thwart the demands for self-determination by neighbouring population, they said.

They said the government must implement the agreement signed by UEDF and OFDM [Oromo Federalist Democratic Movement] on the respect for constitutional order and rule of law immediately and called on the EPRDF to re-engage on talks on the remaining four agreed agenda items.
