Civil society invited to promote good governance in South Sudan

Dec 14, 2006 (YEI) — A southern Sudanese lawmaker urged civil society organizations to play their watchdog role and to promote good governance and rule of law, the Sudan Radio service reported.

Chairperson of the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly education committee, Natsio Loluke Manir, called on civil society not to shy away from their watchdog role of ensuring that the government promotes good governance, social-economic development and rule of law.

He further said that civil society organizations should work closely with the Government of southern Sudan to educate the public about the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Manir was addressing participants of a workshop last week in Yei called “Strengthening Voices for Community Action through Understanding and Participation.”

Manir described the CPA as the bridge to peace and freedom for the people of Sudan.

“The CPA is the only bridge to peace and freedom. There is no any other bridge for the people of Sudan to realize peace and freedom except through the CPA. We have the problem of capacity and as a government we will always complement the efforts of civil society to build capacity among people of Sudan.”
