Uganda, South Sudan discuss commercial ties
Feb 10, 2007 (KAMPALA) — The Ugandan president discussed today with a Southern Sudan government delegation bilateral economic ties and particularly protection of commercial transactions.
President Yoweri Museveni has received a six-man South Sudan delegation at State House Nakasero in Kampala, led by the minister for regional cooperation, Barnaba Marial Benjamin.
In a meeting that took place at Nakasero, President Museveni warmly welcomed the South Sudan guests to Uganda.
They deliberated on issues pertaining to the protection of traders that transact business between Southern Sudan and Uganda.
The leader of the Southern Sudan delegation said they are committed to the Juba peace talks between the government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels (LRA).
He said that they supported the government of Uganda’s position that the venue of the peace talks remains Juba.
The southern Sudan visitors called on Uganda to increase production of essential commodities because southern Sudan, they stressed, relies heavily on Uganda’s goods and services.
The southern Sudan delegation also briefed President Yoweri Museveni on the implementation process of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the National Congress Party and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement that was signed in Nairobi on 9 January 2005.
The Ugandan minister for foreign affairs, Sam Kutesa, and that of internal affairs, Ruhakana Rugunda, attended the meeting.
