Eritrean opposition vows to continue struggle for democracy
Feb 22, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) – The Eritrean opposition alliance vowed at the end of a six-day meeting here to continue with its struggle until a democratic system prevails in Asmars.
The opposition Eritrean Democratic Alliance has said that it would further strengthen its struggle against the dictatorial Eritrean regime until lasting peace and democracy prevails in the country. The second EDA’s regular congress, which had been under way for the past six days, ended on 21 February evening by passing various resolutions.
In a press statement issued regarding the just concluded congress, central committee members Hamed Naka and Mengisteab Asmerom, said the alliance would continue with its peaceful and armed struggle until a democratic system prevails in Eritrea and frees the people from the dictatorial oppressive regime.
The alliance noted the dwindling economic situation, suppression of press freedom and violation of human, religious and nationalities rights. The alliance added that the Eritrean regime is responsible for the strained relations with neighboring countries.
The leaders said, during the six-day congress, member organizations passed important resolutions that will help oust the dictatorial regime. The alliance in its resolutions urged the Eritrean regime to stop land grabbing and respect rights of religions and nationalities.
The member organizations endorsed the charter of the alliance. The alliance pledged to host a conference before the end of this year for Eritrean intellectuals, civic organizations and member organizations of the alliance.
