Darfur’s underground lake discoverer to visit Sudan
April 19, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The discoverer of the underground lake in North Darfur, Professor Faroq Al-Baz, invited to visit Sudan in the coming days, the director general of the Computer Man College Abubeker Mustafa has said on Thursday but he did not disclose the date of the visit.
Mustafa said that Faroq is invited to deliver a lecture about his new discovery, and the economical and social impacts of the discovery in the northern Darfur region.
He further said that he has informed the Sudanese authorities in the country about Al-Baz’s acceptance of the invitation. Mustafa has expressed hope that President of the Republic Sudan, Omer Al-Bashir, will sponsor the lecture going to be delivered by the Lake discoverer Dr. Farog.
Al-Baz together with his colleague researcher revealed last month that they have had an advantage from space and radar pictures, which can penetrate sand layers to 573 meters deep under the sea level.
The researchers claimed that after analyzing the information, they have found that there is a great water lake in Northern Darfur on a space of about 31, 000 kilometers square, which means in a space bigger than that of the American state of Masoshest.
The lake is described that it contains about 2530 cube kilometers of water with the possibility of iron and other minerals existence.
The discovery has assured that; that part of the great desert has special geographical nature. The two researchers have named the lake as (Great Lake of North Darfur).
According to Mustafa, Faroq Al-Baz has discovered, in previous times, a similar lake in South Egypt, in the Northern part of North Darfur Lake and that Egypt has used that lake in reclamation of 100, 000 feddans of agricultural land.
