December 1, 2021 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s main opposition party (SPLM-IO) is holding its 4th National Liberation Council (NLC) meeting in Juba starting Thursday.

The NLC meeting, to be held under the theme: “Towards Democratic, United and Prosperous South Sudan” is scheduled for December 2, 2021, at Freedom Hall.

The NLC is the legislative organ of the armed opposition movement.

The SPLM-IO, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said it is preparing to restructure and organize itself as a separate political organization from the ruling Sudan people’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) headed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The objective of the meeting, it further noted, will be to complete the organization of the NLC and discuss the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

Participants, according to the SPLM-IO, would include members of the NLC, members of the National Legislative Assembly, and members of the state leadership, including chairpersons, deputy chairpersons as well as secretaries.

In December 2013, the SPLM split when its top-level leadership could not amicably resolve political differences over reforms, plunging the country into a violent conflict and causing destruction of properties, loss of lives and displacements.

South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar leads the armed opposition movement.
