Sudan hopes Darfur issue to be solved before end of year

July 9, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese official expressed hope that AU-UN political efforts to end Darfur crisis will help to reach a comprehensive agreement with the holdout rebels in western Sudan before th end of the current year.

Presidential Adviser and Political Affairs Secretary of ruling National Congress Party (NCP) Mustafa Osman Ismail has said the government will observe Addis Ababa Agreement signed between UN, AU and government on deployment of hybrid force.

In a press statement today after meeting with the joint AU-UN representative to Sudan, Rodolphe Adada, at NCP HQ where they discussed ways of resolving Darfur issue peacefully, Mustafa said he welcomes the appointment of Congo Foreign Minister Adada to the post of joint AU-UN representative as he hails from Africa and will actively participate in the resolution of the issue in the coming period.

He said the government was waiting the UN Security Council to issue a resolution to approve the agreement on Hybrid Operation which he said will help to implement the deal.

He pointed out that the government was making efforts to implement the humanitarian agreement signed between government and UNMIS last March, saying that there were efforts being made to resolve Darfur issue where both Libya and Eritrea were involved.
