Sudanese man found dead in Sinai

August 8, 2007 (ISMAILIA, Egypt) — The body of a Sudanese man, bound hand and foot and bloodied from a beating, was found outside a village centre in northern Sinai on Wednesday and police said he had probably argued with smugglers who take illegal migrants to the border between Egypt and Israel.

Hundreds of Sudanese, many of them from the troubled western region of Darfur, have fled to Israel seeking asylum and work. But many have been caught and deported, and some have been shot.

Security sources named the latest victim as Ibrahim Abdallah Bakhit Mohamed, aged 30, who was dumped overnight in the village of el-Tuwaiyil, about 3 km (2 miles) south of El Arish town.

The village is on one of the back roads which smugglers use to reach the Israeli border without passing through Egyptian police checkpoints, the sources said.
